The Vocational Instructor - Construction will support the mission of Lawrence Prospera by inspiring young adults to develop marketable skills and improve well-being. In addition to hands-on training in carpentry and woodworking, you will teach and model the skills required to be successful in the workplace. You will engage with high-risk youth ages 14-24 to facilitate outcome-driven programming in a safe working environment. By helping to enrich the lives of SISU participants, you will contribute to reducing crime rates, increasing employment opportunities, and fostering positive social-emotional development.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise and instruct a crew of 5-10 young adults on the construction site and/or in the workshop
- Maintain all tools and equipment
- Enforce safety rules and regulations, and maintain a safe and clean work environment
- Create and maintain an environment conducive to youth learning
- Support successful completion of learning outcomes
- Maintain accurate records; enter data into internal data management systems
- Assist with the recruitment, orientation, and retention of youth
- Uphold youth accountability measures, including participation in restorative justice practices
- Attend staff meetings, professional development, and program activities
- All other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Must have a High School diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of five years’ experience in woodworking and/or residential construction
- Must have working knowledge of construction codes, materials, tools, and OSHA requirements
- Strong comfort level interacting with youth at different levels of social-emotional growth
- Ability to work sensitively and effectively in a multicultural setting
- Valid driver’s license and has own transportation
- Experience in training of others in a trade preferred
- Bilingual/bicultural (Spanish/English) preferred
