QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Massachusetts licensure as a secondary music educator
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher required with concentration in Music Education
  • Experience as an instrumental music teacher at the Middle and High school levels preferred
  • Must be proficient using music technology software (Noteflight, Noteflight Learn, Sightreading Factory, Make Music)
  • Successful experience is preferred teaching students with a wide range of abilities, interests and needs. Must be proficient on woodwind, brass and string instruments, must have percussion skills, and proficient with music technology software.
  • Positive, energetic, and flexible approach to a process-based and inclusive style of instruction/ rehearsal.
  • Demonstrated proficient-to-advance skill in communication and use of E-Mail and Google Suite
  • Such other alternatives as the Superintendent may deem acceptable and appropriate

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Program, organize and conduct school concerts, parades and other community events in and outside the regular school schedule throughout the year.
  • Teach Band, Jazz Band, Strings, Guitar and/or Keyboard in the General Music class setting. 
    • Jazz Band meets outside the school day.
  • Use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, materials, and music technology that reflects an understanding of instrumental and general music content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, diverse learning styles, assessment strategies and culturally responsive teaching
  • Increase student achievement by conducting ongoing student formative and summative assessments, track progress and adjust teaching accordingly
  • Develop a Instrumental handbook and articulate the plan and expectations to students, parents, administration, and community
  • Conduct instrumental ensembles, including soloists in before/after school rehearsals as needed
  • Organize and conduct related school events/concerts/fundraisers throughout the school year and in conjunction with the Fine Arts Department Head and the Band Parents and other related staff.
  • Coordinate all activities that pertain to the secondary music/general music studies as specified by the Fine Arts Department Head
  • Provide opportunities, register and prepare students to participate in district, region and state audition festivals and other contests
  • Develop and implement a vision of excellence and equity for music at Lawrence Jr. High School including articulation across grade levels and increasing student participation including students traditionally underrepresented in music
  • Increase student retention by providing leadership and responsibility in the development and building of a sequential instrumental program in conjunction with the Fine Arts Department Head such as: overseeing the auditions process, developing and implementing recruitment strategies, monitoring course offerings, student eligibility and other requirements
  • Develop, plan, implement and monitor budget allocations for the program
  • Participate in local, district and state professional organizations (CCMEA, SEMMEA, NAfME, etc.)
  • Work closely with educational, arts, and business communities to promote performance opportunities for students within the community.
  • Develop and implement curriculum objectives based on the learning standards of the curriculum frameworks
  • Maintain all attendance and grade records
  • Accept supervision and guidance from the Fine Arts Department Head and building administrators 
  • Plan for and implement ensemble trips/festivals 
  • Further develop interest/participation in the parent booster group and/or support organization
  • Attend Band Parent meetings and work as a liaison with the organization and assist with fundraisers as needed 
  • Assist with the management of content on platforms for communication and community relations, such as the FBP & building websites and social media outlets 
  • Continue to develop and grow professionally in the position through attendance at meetings, conferences, and seminars, through readings in professional literature and through enrollment in college or university courses 
  • Such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Principal and/or Fine Arts Department Head

SALARY:  In accordance with FEA Unit A contract
