Our client, an alternative investment management firm based in New York, is seeking a Senior Counsel to join its legal department, focused on Employment & Compensation-related matters.
The firm operates in a fast-paced environment, and we are open to speaking with candidates with relevant experience gained within either a law firm or financial services.
Key Responsibilities
- Offer legal guidance on all aspects of executive compensation, including designing and drafting executive employment agreements, incentive plans, bonus structures, and severance packages.
- Work with internal teams to develop and implement competitive and compliant compensation plans.
- Stay updated on changes in laws, regulations, and market trends affecting compensation strategies.
- Negotiate terms of compensation agreements with opposing counsel, such as employment contracts and severance arrangements, achieving favorable terms while minimizing risks.
- Advise on executive compensation and employment matters across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring adherence to local labor laws, tax requirements, and standards.
- Provide legal support for employment matters, including employee relations, workplace policies, discrimination or harassment issues, and compliance with employment laws at the local, state, and federal levels.
- Assist with employment law disputes, including internal investigations and settlements.
- Take part in or lead special projects and contribute to strategic initiatives.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
- JD from an accredited law school.
- Active member of the New York bar (or eligibility for registered in-house counsel status).
- Strong expertise in drafting and negotiating complex compensation arrangements.
- In-depth knowledge of executive compensation laws, regulations, and industry best practices, including tax compliance.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional analytical, oral, and written communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
- Skilled in collaborating with stakeholders across different departments and within the Legal team.
- Solid understanding of employment law topics, such as discrimination, wage and hour compliance, and benefits (preferred).
- International experience is a plus.
