Job Summary:
The Director of Quality Control will be responsible for developing, leading and overseeing all aspects of quality control within our manufacturing processes, obtaining our initial ASME U Stamp certification and subsequently ensuring compliance with ASME standards and regulations. This position will work closely with cross-functional teams to develop and implement quality control plans and initiatives to ensure Lawson manufactures the highest quality trailer on the market.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Team of One. Initially there is only one quality director. Ultimately this position will hire and develop a QC staff, and then lead and manage the quality control team, providing guidance, support, and training to ensure adherence to ASME manufacturing standards.
- Develop and implement quality control plans, policies, and procedures to obtain initial certifications and to ensure compliance with ASME codes and standards. Using these plans, ensure that all ASME code required pressure vessels are manufactured accordingly with the proper materials and documentation. Ensures in process and hold point inspections for work in the production department are included in the QC plans.
- Conduct inspections and audits to ensure that manufacturing processes, products, and documentation meet ASME requirements. Monitor weld procedures to verify compliance with company, customer, and code specifications. Inspect welded sub-assemblies and assemblies at designated points in the manufacturing process for ASME hold points.
- Inspect all ASME incoming fabricated materials such as shells, heads, transitions, and other components to ensure that they conform to drawings or industry fabrication standards.
- Ensure all measuring devices, gauges, and instruments required for quality control inspections are maintained, calibrated, and certified. Maintains records of all calibrations, recalibrations, and certifications.
- Ensure all welders performance qualifications are properly recorded and verifies welding procedures are appropriate for the requirements of the work being performed.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, production, and supply chain, to identify and resolve quality-related issues.
- Facilitate continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality and operational efficiency.
- Ensure that necessary certifications and documentation are obtained and maintained to meet ASME requirements. Initiate a vessel file folder for each code pressure vessel before work is started, and that the data report for each code vessel is properly filled out and is routed to the proper destination.
- Stay up-to-date with changes in ASME codes and standards, and proactively implement necessary updates to quality control processes.
- Create and maintain quality control metrics and reporting systems to monitor performance and identify areas for improvement.
- Lead investigations and root cause analysis for quality-related incidents or non-conformances, and implement corrective and preventive actions as necessary.
- Collaborate with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure that purchased components and services meet ASME requirements.
- Maintain a culture of quality throughout the organization, fostering awareness and accountability at all levels.
- Coordinate outside inspections with authorized ASME inspectors, vendors, customers and other inspection agencies. Obtain initial certification and tri-annual review of ASME stamp certifications.
- Make final QC inspection of completed components and pressure vessels before release for shipment/utilization in other components to ensure they conform with specifications.
- Provides technical data to fabrication scheduler to ensure that all QC hold points and outside services are included in the manufacturing schedule.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector
- Excellent time management and written and spoken communication skills, highly professional, organized, and trustworthy team player; proficiency in English.
- Strong knowledge of ASME standards, including Section VIII, Section IX, and other relevant codes and standards.
- Experience leading and managing a team of quality control professionals.
- Proven track record of implementing and improving quality control processes in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to lead investigations and root cause analysis.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
- Detail-oriented mindset and strong organizational skills.
- ASME certification, such as Certified Quality Control Manager (CQCM), is highly desirable.
- Ability to analyze and interpret technical drawings and weld symbols.
- Ability to determine product conformity based on established tolerance levels
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field.
- At least eight (8) years of experience in quality, ASME Section VIII and IX, heavy industry, manufacturing, construction, welding, non-destructive testing, and/or other similar fields.
- At least three (3) years of experience leading and managing direct reports.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Frequently required to sit, stand, use hands, talk, and hear. Regularly required to walk and reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles.
