What are the responsibilities and job description for the Aquatics Curator position at Layton Animal and Wildlife Encounters?

The Aquatics Curator is responsible for overseeing the care, management, and exhibition of aquatic species at Layton Aquarium and Wildlife Center. This role involves ensuring the health and well-being of marine and freshwater life, managing the aquarium's aquatic exhibits, and leading a team of aquarists and support staff. The Aquatics Curator will also work closely with relevant staff to ensure that education and conservation are front and center in our engaging and informative exhibits, while supporting the aquarium's mission to promote environmental stewardship and aquatic conservation.

Key Responsibilities

Aquatic Species Care & Management:

  • Oversee the daily care and maintenance of aquatic life in the aquarium's exhibits.
  • Ensure all species are housed in optimal environments, including monitoring water quality, temperature, and habitat conditions.
  • Work closely with veterinary and animal care teams to manage animal health, including the implementation of treatment plans and emergency response procedures.

Exhibit Development & Maintenance:

  • Collaborate with the exhibit design and facilities staff to develop new exhibits, ensuring they meet both educational and aesthetic goals.
  • Oversee routine maintenance and renovations of exhibits to ensure they are safe, clean, and functional.
  • Implement best practices for exhibit lighting, filtration, and water circulation systems.

Team Leadership & Staff Management

  • Supervise and mentor aquarists and other staff members within the Husbandry department.
  • Provide ongoing training and professional development for staff to ensure high standards of animal care and exhibit presentation.
  • Establish work schedules, perform staff evaluations, and manage performance.

Conservation & Education:

  • Collaborate with the public engagement team to develop educational programs that engage the public and raise awareness about marine and freshwater ecosystems.

Budget & Resource Management:

Oversee purchasing of equipment, supplies, and specimens while maintaining cost-effective operations.

Public Engagement & Outreach:

- Assist as requested in creating engaging educational content for visitors, including interpretive signage, interactive displays, and public programs.

- Lead tours and special events for members and VIP guests.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Zoology, Aquatic Ecology, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in aquarium or marine biology settings, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven experience in the care and management of a diverse range of aquatic species, including marine, freshwater, and invertebrates.
  • - AALSO Water Quality and Life Support System Certified

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of aquatic biology, ecosystems, and animal husbandry.
  • Ability to manage a team and work collaboratively across departments.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in the use of aquarium systems (water filtration, life support systems) and equipment..
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting up to 50 pounds, standing for extended periods, and working in wet or humid conditions.
  • Comfortable working in close proximity to animals, including potentially hazardous species.

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
