What are the responsibilities and job description for the Code Enforcement Officer I or II position at Layton City?
GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of entry level technical duties related to enforcing the provisions of City laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and other legal issues related to streets, sidewalks, parking strips, abandoned vehicles, snow issues, weeds, and other hazards and nuisance abatement issues.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Promotes and follows the City's mission statement, values and expectations.
Safely operates a department vehicle in accordance with department policy.
Patrols designated areas of Layton City and conducts field investigations. Checks for violations of city ordinances, including "clear view" on corner lots, landscaping blocking regulatory and street signs, excessive weeds, issues related to proper snow removal, mud deposited on public streets, graffiti, parking violations, abandoned vehicles, vehicles illegally displayed for sale, and other nuisance abatement issues.
Receives complaints and reports from citizens regarding alleged violations of City ordinances, codes, and regulations. Investigates these claims and determines the nature of the allegation and apprises complainants of possible solutions.
Issues citations or warnings of violations of City ordinances; keeps records of violations and follows up to secure correction of situation; conducts impounds where appropriate.
Gathers evidence and completes comprehensive reports of daily activities and enforcement actions; initiates legal proceedings when appropriate, prepares for court cases, and testifies in court when required.
Conducts regular review of codes, ordinances, and regulations; receives legal interpretations as needed to direct enforcement of compliance; makes recommendations related to practical application of codes and ordinances; assists in adapting, modifying, or rewriting codes as needed.
Cover as a crossing guard.
Performs ongoing public relations to enhance the image of the department within the community.
Maintains professional appearance and adheres to department dress and grooming standards.
Has a working knowledge of all department issued equipment and maintains the equipment in good working order.
Maintains required certification(s).
Performs other duties as assigned or directed to promote the overall goals and objectives of the department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Code Enforcement Officer I: ($21.63 - $30.29 per hour)
High school diploma or GED
Valid drivers license and obtain Utah drivers license within 14 days of hire
Code Enforcement Officer II: ($22.71 - $31.80 per hour)
High school diploma or GED
Valid drivers license and obtain Utah drivers license within 14 days of hire
Three (3) years responsible experience in Code Enforcement or as a Law Enforcement Officer.
