What You Will Do :

  • The Electrical Engineer for the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory campus ensures the reliability of electrical equipment by managing preventive maintenance, conducting risk assessments, and optimizing maintenance strategies.
  • This role involves performing studies to improve safety, reliability, and sustainability, and addressing equipment failures through root cause analysis and solutions.
  • The engineer collaborates with Facilities Operations and Maintenance, reviews testing reports, and leads quarterly meetings to align priorities.
  • Responsibilities include overseeing maintenance, tracking equipment metrics, supporting outages and repairs, updating system configurations, and ensuring compliance with LOTO permits and Arc Flash calculations.
  • The engineer also maintains electrical specifications and provides technical guidance for complex repairs.

What is Required, for Level 3 :

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in electrical engineering or related discipline and a minimum of 5 years of relevant electrical engineering experience; or three (3) years of relevant experience and a Master's degree or 9 years equivalent related educational / professional experience.
  • Experience with electrical system troubleshooting, testing and preventive maintenance programs, and risk assessments.
  • Experience conducting electrical engineering studies of low and medium voltage equipment, including power system analysis involving short circuit, voltage drop, power factor, protective device coordination, and Arc Flash analysis by using SKM.
  • Experienced in computer-based power system modeling with one of the following software packages (SKM, Easy Power, ETAP).
  • Demonstrated experience in the application of electrical codes, regulations, and standards (i.e. NEC / NFPA 70, NFPA 70B, NFPA 70E, ANSI / IEEE, NETA MTS, NETA ATS).
  • In Addition to Above, Level 4 :

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in electrical engineering or related discipline and a minimum of eight (8) years of relevant electrical engineering experience; or six (6) years of relevant experience and a Master's degree or equivalent 12 years equivalent related educational / professional experience.
  • Desired Qualifications :

  • Working knowledge of protection, control, automation, and SCADA in Medium and High Voltages (12.47kV and 115kV) electrical systems.
  • Electrical design experience in medium and low voltage power systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical construction methods, and selection of electrical equipment, including medium / low voltage switchgears, and materials for electrical power distribution.
  • Registered professional engineer in the State of California.
  • Notes :

  • This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
  • The Electrical Systems Engineer 3 position is expected to pay $162,000 - $174,000 annually, which fits into the full range of $115,800 - $195,384 for the job classification of G31.3.
  • The Electrical Systems Engineer 4 position is expected to pay $180,000 - $210,000 annually, which fits into the full range of $138,984 - $234,528 for the job classification of G31.4.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
