Position: Nurse Practitioner

I. General Purpose:
Provides, directs, and evaluates care to Lake Cumberland Rheumatology (LCR) patients performs selected laboratory testing, referrals to physicians as needed, writes prescriptions, and performs procedures within the scope of expertise, protocols, and available equipment. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a member of the health care team who works in collaboration with LCR physicians. The NP follows established protocols and collaborates with physicians, however, does have day-to-day independence in health care decisions.
II. Reporting Accountability:
Reports to the Practice Manager.
III. Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Demonstrates commitment to the quality philosophy and values of LCR by maintaining established policies and procedures, organizational objectives, process improvement, and safety standards.
2. Demonstrates the LCR Code of Conduct standards in all interpersonal relations.
3. Oversees clinical assessment of patients, ordering diagnostics and administering physical exam, to determine condition.
4. Refers patients to physicians as needed.
5. Oversees medical therapeutics and treatment of patients; prescribes medication, follow-up and additional diagnostics as needed.
6. Educates patients about their conditions and ailments and makes recommendations and follow-up concerning behavior changes to improve health.
7. Assures that adequate records are maintained; periodically reviews patient records in collaboration with their collaborating physician.
8. Exhibits empathy, insight, understanding, compassion, and cooperation.
IV. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Ability to assess a patient's condition and to initiate appropriate treatment.
2. Extensive knowledge of nursing principles and practices.
3. Knowledge of pharmaceuticals to treat disease and illnesses, to include a knowledge of the mechanism of action, side effects, toxic nature, and drug interactions of medications.
4. Ability to perform and interpret diagnostic tests in order to determine therapeutic treatment plans
5. Ability to exercise judgment in determining when to consult other resources for diagnosis and case management.
6. Demonstrates accountability for nursing practice through planned & continuous professional growth and development.
7. Demonstrates a leadership role through clinical practice, supervision, teaching and research.
8. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, co-workers, and other hospital personnel on a one-to-one basis using appropriate grammar vocabulary and work usage.
9. The use of independent judgment and discretion while maintaining patient rights.
10. The ability to juggle several requests simultaneously and appropriately prioritize.
V. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
A. Education/Experience Requirements:
a. Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Kentucky.
b. Successful completion of a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the Kentucky State Board of Nursing.
c. Current certification by a national organization recognized by the Kentucky State Board of Nursing.
d. BLS for Healthcare Provider required.
e. Must have experience with:
i. Office based patient care
ii. Injections
B. Equipment Operated:
Phone, computer, medical charts, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, and other nursing items. May involve use of walkers, wheelchairs, pulse oximetry, and oxygen tanks.
C. Physical and Mental Requirements:
a. Daily standing, sitting, squatting, stooping, walking, bending, maneuvering balancing, kneeling, lifting.
b. Finger dexterity, clericalperception, motor coordination, visual acuity, hearing, eye-hand coordination.

VII. Exposure Risk:
Category I - Tasks that involve anticipated contact with blood, body fluids or tissue. Medical exam and treatment rooms and medical offices. Occasional exposure to communicable diseases and biohazards.
