Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Controller with construction industry experience to join our finance team. The Controller will play a critical role in developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. The Controller supervises the Accounts Payable, Payroll and Billing functions of the company and is responsible for managing the team to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation and support of budget and forecast activities.
Responsibilities
- Maintains a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
- Ensures an accurate and timely month close.
- Oversees the daily banking requirements.
- Oversees the activities of the Accounting Department for maintaining the chart of accounts, the accurate and timely dissemination of the financial reports including but not limited to, internal and external monthly financial statements, management reports, audits, and budgets.
- Oversees the accurate and timely management of accounts payable, purchase orders, petty cash, employee expense reports, cash control, including monthly bank reconciliations, and payroll processing. Defines expectations and oversees activities of Accounts Receivable activities to ensure the accurate and timely management of all accounts receivable aging components.
- Establishes and maintains system for the accurate reporting of fixed asset purchases, depreciation, and maintenance costs.
- Maintains all corporate insurance policies.
- Ensures compliance with loan covenants.
- Supports budget and forecasting activities to business unit leaders, project executives and project managers to assist with the management of job costs.
- Monitors and analyzes department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
- Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.
- Responds to inquiries from the President and Vice President regarding financial results, special reporting requests and other requests as needed.
- Delivers a clean and timely year-end audit.
- Ensures all financial reporting deadlines are met.
- Assists in development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department.
- Provides training to new and existing staff as needed.
- Handles personnel issues relating to accounting staff for conflicts, absenteeism, performance, etc.
- Works with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year and monitors; advises on progress to enhance the professional development of staff.
- Manages cash flow and cash flow projections.
- Determines and reports budget to actual variances.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- Makes suggestions to management to improve process and accuracy.
- Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government reporting and tax requirements.
- Establishes and maintains company required licenses and certifications as needed
- The marginal functions of this position have not been included. Employee will be required to follow any other job-related duties required by management.
Skills
- Experience in working with a commercial construction firm preferred.
- Proficient in an array of PC skills and software to include Microsoft Office Suite and accounting software programs. Experience in Spectrum and Heavy Job a plus.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal, supervisory and customer service skills.
- Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting practices.
- Proficiency in account reconciliation techniques.
- Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines.

- Strong knowledge of budgeting and expense control.
- Ability to develop reports and write business correspondence.

Education/Experience:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and/or Finance.
- Five to seven years prior experience in financial reporting and general ledger required.
- Prior experience in construction accounting preferred.
