Description:
The Operator II of a Robotic Structural Steel Welding System is responsible for operating and maintaining robotic welding equipment used to fabricate structural steel components. This role involves ensuring the efficient and accurate operation of the welding system, adhering to safety protocols, and producing high-quality welds.
Responsibilities:
- Equipment Operation:
- Set up and calibrate robotic welding systems according to project specifications.
- Directly or supervise the loading and unloading of steel components into the robotics system.
- Planning and communicating parts needs for the robotics system and directly or supervising the organization of parts bins.
- Monitor the robotic welding process, adjusting parameters as needed.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any equipment malfunctions promptly.
- Lead and direct SBA Support personnel with needs related to the robotics system.
- Fully program or modify programs in conjunction with a programmer based on planning and immediate needs.
- Proficiency in proprietary software (certification required), basic level of statistical analysis, and basic knowledge of ABB Robotics pendant operation and hardware/software manipulation.
- Quality Control:
- Inspect welds for defects like porosity, undercut, or incomplete fusion.
- Ensure welds meet industry standards and project requirements.
- Perform visual inspections and use non-destructive testing methods (e.g., ultrasonic testing) when necessary.
- Safety Compliance:
- Follow safety guidelines and protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) while operating the welding system.
- Report any safety concerns or incidents to the supervisor.
- Material Handling:
- Coordinate with other team members to move steel components to and from welding area.
- Safely operate overhead cranes, forklifts, or other material-handling equipment.
- Maintenance and Repairs:
- Perform routine maintenance on robotic welding systems, including cleaning, lubrication, and part replacement.
- Collaborate with maintenance technicians to address any mechanical or electrical issues.
- Keep accurate records of maintenance tasks and repairs.
- Documentation:
- Maintain detailed records of welding parameters, production logs, and quality control reports.
- Complete work orders and update project documentation as required.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with engineers, fabricators, and other team members to ensure seamless production processes.
- Communicate effectively to address any production challenges or changes.
Qualifications:
- Certification in welding (e.g., AWS Certified Welder) required.
- Experience operating robotic welding systems or similar automated machinery.
- Knowledge of structural steel fabrication processes.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and welding symbols.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Physical stamina to stand, lift, and move heavy steel components.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a safety-conscious mindset.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs. repeatedly, occasionally lift greater than 50 lbs. with the support of other team members.
- Ability to operate tools such as electric and gas-powered chain saws, nail guns, banding clamps, and pry bars.
- Ability to work in an uncontrolled climate, including heat, cold, and humidity.
- Capability to stand for long periods of time.
- Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- Ability to detect alarms and signals, both auditory and visual.
- Depth perception and eye-hand coordination for precision tasks and safety.
- Effective communication skills to coordinate with team members and follow instructions.
- Ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
