THE ROLE
LEAD Charter School seeks an exceptional Superintendent of Schools to join our mission-driven community. Our goal is to transform equity through opportunities for young people in Newark. Our innovative model re-engages students through active participation in rigorous, relevant content and standards-driven, competency-based instruction aligned with market demands. Reporting to the Charter Management Organizations (CMO), the Superintendent of Schools will work closely with school leaders to drive academic achievement and operational efficiency, fostering a culture of care, excellence, equity, and continuous improvement.

The mission of LEAD is to enable students ages 16-21 in grades 9-12 to master essential skills for success in careers, postsecondary education, and community leadership within a global society. We implement the Newark Opportunity Youth Network (NOYN) school model, supporting the unique academic and non-academic needs of students who have disengaged from traditional schooling. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- Master’s degree in Education, Administration, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of experience in school leadership or regional leadership roles.
- SBA certification license preferred
- Experience working in urban education or charter schools strongly preferred.
- Proven track record of driving academic achievement and operational excellence in a school or regional leadership role.
- Strong instructional background with the ability to analyze and improve teaching and learning outcomes.
- Experience managing complex operations, including budgets, facilities, and compliance.
- Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to coach, motivate, and inspire teams.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships across diverse stakeholders.
- Commitment to NOYN school model and implementation with fidelity.
- Required criminal history background check, proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident status & NJ residency.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructional Leadership
- Oversee the Chief Academic Officer and Chief Operations Officer to set and achieve ambitious academic goals across multiple schools.
- Lead the development and execution of high-quality instructional programs, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and student needs.
- Observe, coach, and develop staff to enhance their effectiveness and professional growth.
- Monitor and analyze student performance data to identify trends, address challenges, and replicate success.
- Drive initiatives to strengthen curriculum, assessments, and teaching practices in partnership with the academic team.
- Ensure alignment with state and local standards, as well as Uncommon’s mission and values.
Operational Leadership
- Oversee the operational strategy and execution for schools in the region, including budget management, compliance, and resource allocation.
- Ensure schools maintain safe, welcoming, and well-functioning environments for students and staff.
- Collaborate with Principals and operational teams to optimize facilities, transportation, technology, and food services.
- Lead crisis management efforts and support school leaders in responding effectively to emergencies.
- Manage and improve key operational systems to support seamless school functioning and student success.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
Team Development and Culture
- Serve as a mentor and coach, fostering a pipeline of future leadership talent.
- Cultivate a strong, cohesive team by building trust, collaboration, and a shared commitment to excellence.
- Promote an inclusive and equitable school culture that values diversity and prioritizes student and staff well-being.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Twelve-month employee.
EVALUATION
- Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the board's policy on evaluation.
