Qualifications
12 Months. Salary to be determined by the Board of Education.
- High School Diploma (some college desired).
- Five years’ experience in transportation operations.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and adhere to prescribed procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
- Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
- Have completed the NJ Transportation Supervisors Certificate program.
- Coordinates, builds and maintains schedules for bus routes for all students that attend LEAP Academy, maintaining contact with schools.
- Coordinates, builds and maintain scheduled routes for students that attend LEAP.
- Handles interviews of all bus drivers and bus aides with recommendation of employment being given to the Human Resource Office.
- Supervises transportation staff, including full time bus drivers, substitute bus drivers, full-time bus aides, substitute bus aides, Assistant Transportation Coordinator and Transportation Secretaries, and Dispatcher
- Completes annual evaluations for all Transportation Staff.
- Attend the School Transportation Supervisors of New Jersey Pupil Transportation Conference.
- Maintains communication radios in buses, mechanic shop, base radio in office and portable radio at personal residence. Portable radio must accompany you at all times when buses are on the road.
- Coordinates with purchasing the specifications of the new buses when needed. When buses arrive, goes over specifications with head mechanic, to make sure the bus is exactly what the district ordered. Call insurance companies and bus communication company to have insurance and bus radio installed.
- Changes, adds, deletes and implements new routes and coordinates existing routes for special education students to schools outside the district to keep transportation costs lower.
- Transports drivers, picks up drivers, picks up buses and do whatever is necessary for drivers to have buses when breakdowns occur during the day, evening, night or on weekends.
- Handles parent complaints, along with principals’, teachers’ and bus drivers’ concerns or problems with students.
- Prepares and completes information for State District Report of Transported Resident Students, which shows each transported student, the mileage from their home to school, and the cost of each route as of October 15th of the current school year.
- Responds to all bus accidents, completes state and county reports, contracts proper authorities regarding the accident, and files paperwork accordingly.
- Evaluates new bus stops when needed as students enter the district. Observes bus stops for any concerns with traffic, crossing guards, or any other problems. Works with the police department regarding concerns with the public and school district.
- Discusses personnel and professional matters with the Transportation Staff as needed.
- Observes bus drivers doing their daily operations, such as following them, stopping and greeting buses at the schools, doing spot checks on buses, or riding with the bus drivers to observe performance.
- Maintains contact with drivers, teachers, principals and School Safety and Security Coordinator on a daily basis for problems that arise with transportation during the day and during the after school programs.
- Schedules and prepares buses for State of New Jersey inspections twice a year. Prepares and schedules state inspection for the band equipment bus for its yearly inspection at a local facility.
- Approves or denies payment on invoices for the Transportation Department. Approves or denies repairs on buses with the mechanic.
- Maintains attendance records of all bus drivers and bus aides.
- Prepares transportation budget along with appropriate documentation.
- Schedules bus driver substitutes as needed.
