    LEARN, Southeastern Connecticut's Regional Educational Service Center, invites candidates to apply for a Long-Term Substitute Teacher - Wellness, Recreation, and Community Integration opening at our Ocean Avenue LEARNing Academy in New London, Connecticut. This opportunity is available for the remainder of the 2024-25 school year.

    General Scope of Responsibilities
    The Wellness, Recreation, and Community Integration Teacher is responsible for delivering specially designed wellness, recreation, and community-based educational programming for students with I.E.P.-identified disabilities, including those who may have significant delays or disorders in physical, cognitive, and emotional development. This role also involves participating in the planning and implementation of a continuum of services, which includes consultation, indirect, and direct service, to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities.

    Relationship within the Organization
    The Wellness, Recreation, and Community Integration Teacher is responsible to the Director and Assistant Director of Specialized Programs.

    Responsibilities
    • Develop and implement engaging lessons to individuals, smalls groups, and whole classes related to wellness, recreation, and community based activities.
    • Teach and co-teach appropriate developmental Adapted Physical Education programming and intervention to students with special needs.
    • Develop and plan for on and off campus recreational activities based on students’ skills and interests.
    • Complete and submit required reports within specified time limits.
    • Support whole school health and wellness activities and initiatives.
    • Develop and implement a schedule for providing services to students for each program assigned.
    • Make recommendations to transdisciplinary team in developing students’ Individual Education Plans.
    • Provide input and write activities for special programs which involve physical education, health and wellness, and community and recreation for students with disabilities.
    • Work cooperatively with staff, parents, colleagues, and administrators.
    • Attend appropriate meetings including, but not limited to, Planning and Placement Team meetings, and staff meetings.
    • Supervise and monitor instructional assistants and other persons assigned to the classroom.
    • Support program and agency goals.
    • Ability to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
    • Ability to Lift/restrain students 50 lbs or higher as needed.
    • Maintain equipment and materials.
    • Collaborate with transdisciplinary team to coordinate and integrate opportunities for practice and generalization of target skills.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or Assistant Director of Specialized Programs.

    Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • Current CT SDE certification in Physical Education required.
    • Experience in Adaptive Physical Education preferred.
    • Certification in Occupational Therapy preferred.
