Job Title: School Nurse (RN/LPN)

Summary
To provide appropriate nursing care to students and staff, performing essential health services, health assessments, and interventions. The nurse will ensure the physical and emotional well-being of students in the school setting, under the direction of an RN or physician, when applicable. This role supports both RN and LPN licensed individuals in delivering healthcare services in accordance with school policies and state laws.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Provide basic nursing functions, including health assessments, first aid, and emergency care, as well as monitoring illnesses and injuries.
- Conduct school health screenings (dental, vision, hearing,) and physical assessments.
- Administer medications and treatments as per prescribed health policies and procedures; monitor and document medication compliance.
- Assist in the development and delivery of health education and counseling to students, staff, and parents regarding wellness behaviors, self-care, and decision-making.
- Monitor and maintain student immunization records in compliance with state regulations.
- Assist in identifying and reporting suspected child abuse and neglect.
- Coordinate and provide first aid services and emergency care to students as needed.
- Document all health-related encounters and track follow-up care or referrals.
- Review and interpret medical reports from healthcare providers to support student health needs.
- Participate in health-related committee meetings, in-service training, and other professional development opportunities.
- Maintain confidentiality of student health information as required by law.
- Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Principal or Director of Health Services.
Supervisory Duties
Supervise students while in their care, ensuring a safe environment and providing appropriate medical attention as needed.
Qualifications
Education/Experience:
- Must hold a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the State of Missouri.
- Current CPR certification required.
Skills and Abilities:
- Must possess strong communication skills to effectively interact with students, staff, and parents.
- Ability to read and interpret documents, write reports, and follow complex instructions.
- Knowledge of mathematical concepts and their application to health-related tasks (e.g., medication dosage, assessments).
- Ability to assess, triage, and treat injuries and illnesses efficiently and effectively.
- Familiarity with basic computer functions and district software to track and access student health information.
- Organized, reliable, and professional, with strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with legal and policy requirements regarding student health information.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to speak, hear, and communicate effectively in a school environment with multiple distractions.
- Ability to move around the school building, assist students, and perform medical interventions as necessary.
- Occasional to frequent lifting or carrying of up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to read handwritten and printed materials.
Conditions and Environment
- Work in a dynamic school environment with various distractions, occasional exposure to sharps, bodily fluids, and communicable diseases.
- May be required to work outdoors for short periods (e.g., loading buses, supervising safety drills).
- Minimal risk of injury associated with the position.
Terms of Employment
- 194 days per school year.
- Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
