Job Title: After-School Veterinary Assistant
Reports To: Practice Manager
Summary:
We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented After-School Veterinary Assistant with a primary focus on maintaining a clean and sanitary environment for our patients and staff. This position is ideal for a responsible individual with a passion for animals and a strong work ethic, who is looking to gain experience in a veterinary setting. This is a part-time, after-school position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Cleaning and Sanitizing: This is the primary focus of the role. Responsibilities include:
- Cleaning and disinfecting animal cages, kennels, and runs, ensuring proper sanitation protocols are followed.
- Cleaning and sanitizing examination rooms, treatment areas, and surgical suites between patients.
- Mopping and sweeping floors, removing debris, and maintaining overall cleanliness of the clinic.
- Emptying trash receptacles and ensuring proper disposal of waste.
- Cleaning and restocking restrooms.
- Washing and drying laundry (towels, blankets, etc.).
- Cleaning and organizing common areas, including reception, waiting areas, and staff break rooms.
- Cleaning surgical instruments following established protocols.
- Operating the autoclave to sterilize surgical instruments and other medical equipment.
Animal Care Support (Secondary and as time allows):
- Assisting with basic animal care tasks, such as feeding and providing fresh water (under supervision).
- Observing animals for any signs of illness or distress and reporting concerns to the veterinary staff.
- Assisting with gentle animal restraint as needed (training provided).
Other Duties:
- Stocking supplies and notifying supervisor when supplies are low.
- Maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
- Following all safety protocols and procedures.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 15 years of age.
- A genuine love for animals and a desire to work in an animal care environment.
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a clean and sanitary environment.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Reliable and punctual.
- Previous experience in cleaning or animal care is a plus, but not required.
Work Schedule:
- Part-time, after-school hours, Monday-Thursday from 3:30 to 6pm. Specific schedule can be discussed.
