What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Controls Technician position at Leclerc Foods?
The Controls Technician is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining automated systems, including control panels, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and other equipment that are used to control machinery and other related systems.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain industrial automation systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and control panels.
- Collaborate with engineers and other technical experts to design and develop control systems, support all company projects not only locally driven but also from corporate level. Work directly with project team in all projects that will introduce, update current programs. Ensuring all critical information required is identified up front and embedded into the project for commissioning.
- Execute tasks on equipment to meet certification and that do not compromise product integrity.
· Program PLCs and HMIs using ladder logic and other programming languages.: Monitor and manage the functionality of HMI’s and controls devices, promptly reporting any concerns to uphold a secure environment within the controls/logic storage area.
- Configure and maintain communication networks, such as Ethernet and Device Net.
- Collaborate with other technicians and operators to troubleshoot and repair equipment problems.
- Perform regular preventive maintenance on control systems and equipment.
- Create and maintain documentation, including schematics, diagrams, and operating manuals.
· Be the Subject matter expert and technical resource that can support and train the team on not only controls and advance electrical troubleshooting but also overall theory of operation of machinery within the plant, ensure accurate recording of findings: what was changed and to what.
- Own and lead the Arc Flash and Electrical safety initiatives and program for the site, with direction and oversight from the maintenance manager and plant leadership team.
- Ensure compliance and application of safety regulations and Leclerc’s procedures, including but not limited to the use of Personal (PPE) and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) measures and others safety programs.
- Identify potential safety hazards and assist the Maintenance Manager to improve safety procedures.
- 6S: Maintain the Controls storage and work areas.
- Participate in training sessions for new equipment functionalities, be willing to travel some for FAT’s when requested, for ongoing training, and sister plant support when required.
- Provide technical resource to meet BRC and all other required audits and regulatory agency requirements. Report controls changes or programs not compliant with BRC requirements to the Maintenance Manager and Quality team.
- Ensure the prompt response to controls issues on the lines and in the Cells and automated warehouse; ensuring all changes are documented and communicated to all shifts for their awareness and knowledge.
- Be available for on call support as needed.
- Ensure any updates and changes to programs are captured, accurate in a secure file location. Maintain backups of all machinery programs in an organized and easily accessible digital library Perform annual review of all changes to ensure back-ups are correct; if not address any issues found and log in secure file location
- Maintain all electrical prints and schematics to current status, ensure availability withing each designated cabinet for the teams to readily utilize.
- Define safety, minimum and maximum spare parts based on the equipment criticality and likelihood of failure. Identify obsolete spare parts from inventory and notify Manager and Stores Clerk what is to be order as replacement.
- Clarify any purchase order or/and any other issues for Controls equipment with the Stores Clerk team and/or procurement team.
- Complete duties as assigned not only related to Controls needs, but any as assigned by Maintenance Manager or Members of plant leadership. Provide updates and ETA’s on process of projects and expected completion times with or without request.
Qualifications:
- Associate's degree in electrical engineering or related field.
- At least 2 years of experience in designing, developing, and maintaining control systems.
- Proficient in PLC programming using ladder logic and other programming languages.
- Familiar with industrial communication networks, such as Ethernet and DeviceNet.
- Experience in troubleshooting and repairing industrial equipment.
- Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
