Controller
Location: Bedford, Ma- 4 days on site, one day remote to start
Pay: $115K-$130K, depending on experience
Our client in Bedford, Ma. is seeking a Controller to lead the accounting functions, optimize financial processes, and support their mission of serving individuals with disabilities and mental health needs. Reporting to the CFO, you will oversee financial reporting, enhance operational efficiency, and foster a collaborative team environment.

Summary:
The Controller serves as the agency's financial expert, overseeing financial statements, cash management, and all accounting functions. Under the direction of the CFO, the Controller ensures the integrity of financial reporting, maintains strong internal controls, and serves as the primary liaison with external auditors, banks, and financial partners. This role ensures compliance with GAAP and regulatory standards while driving process efficiencies.
Core Responsibilities:
- Accounting & Financial Management
- Oversee all accounting operations, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with GAAP.
- Maintain the General Ledger and manage the monthly close process, including reconciliations and journal entries.
- Ensure timely reconciliation of all accounts and ledgers.
- Lead the year-end audit process, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.
- Manage compliance with local, state, and federal reporting and tax filings.
- Oversee accurate preparation and submission of the Uniform Financial Report (UFR) for Massachusetts human and social service organizations.
- Supervise accounts receivable (billing and cash receipts) and accounts payable operations, implementing automation and process improvements.
- Oversee payroll processing and integration between HRIS and accounting systems.
- Monitor daily cash flow to ensure liquidity for operational needs.
- Manage and track fixed assets, ensuring accurate depreciation schedules.
- Implement and enforce strong internal controls over financial transactions and reporting systems.
- Contracts & Grant Management
- Oversee the management of 50 contracts, primarily with the MA Department of Development Services (DDS) and MA Department of Mental Health (DMH).
- Ensure accurate and timely monthly billing, financial tracking, and reporting for all contracts.
- Collaborate with program and administrative teams to optimize financial reporting and contract compliance.
- Supervise the financial management of Representative Payee services for approximately 150 clients, ensuring compliance with Social Security Administration (SSA) regulations.
- Leadership & Department Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of six accounting professionals.
- Foster a responsive, service-oriented department that supports the agency's diverse programs.
- Promote continuous process improvement, automation, and efficiency in accounting functions.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA or CMA preferred.
- 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including 5 years in a supervisory role.
- Strong technical accounting skills with expertise in financial operations and systems management.
- Experience in the nonprofit and/or human service sector preferred.
- High proficiency with accounting systems (Acumatica preferred), HRIS (Dayforce), Excel, SharePoint/Teams, and automation tools.
- Proven ability to automate and streamline accounting functions for greater efficiency.
- Experience with general ledger management and month-end/year-end closing processes.
- Familiarity with Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) contracts, UFR reporting, and EIM billing preferred.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively, integrate different viewpoints, and exercise sound judgment.
