The Learning Frameworks faculty member plays a crucial role in supporting student success through direct instruction and collaboration with various campus partners, specifically focusing on teaching within Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) facilities. This position requires understanding and following all TDCJ protocols and security procedures while supporting incarcerated students in developing academic skills and promoting pathways to successful reentry and career development.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to student-centered teaching and learning, showing flexibility in meeting diverse student needs while maintaining high academic standards within the constraints of a correctional setting. They will be expected to contribute to department and college-wide efforts to improve student persistence and completion rates through innovative teaching strategies adapted for limited technology environments.

Faculty schedules vary by semester. Teaching will primarily occur within TDCJ facilities, requiring adaptation to facility schedules and security requirements. The successful candidate must be able to adapt teaching strategies and materials to comply with TDCJ regulations and limited technology access. This position requires regular travel between multiple TDCJ units within the college's service area, including but not limited to units in Huntsville, Navasota, and Dayton. Faculty will be reimbursed for mileage between their primary campus location and TDCJ facilities according to state and college travel policies.

This position requires working closely with Lee College Huntsville faculty, reentry services, academic and student support services, advising and counseling services, and other campus offices to create a comprehensive network of support for students. The successful candidate will serve as a bridge between academic instruction and student services, helping students develop the skills needed for college success while connecting them to appropriate resources both during incarceration and post-release.

  • Participating in the college's early alert system.
  • Collaborating with academic advisors, success coaches, and reentry staff.
  • Supporting retention and reentry initiatives.
  • Engaging with educational programs across TDCJ facilities.
  • Participating in professional development focused on student success and correctional education.
  • Supporting education as a transformative tool for personal growth and reduced recidivism.
  • Complete required TDCJ security training and maintain security clearance.
  • Teach Learning Frameworks courses within TDCJ facilities.
  • Adapt teaching materials and strategies for use within TDCJ facility constraints.
  • Teach assigned classes in keeping with approved syllabi, outlines, and instructional materials.
  • Maintain accurate student records in compliance with Lee College requirements.
  • Submit required student reports to the Admissions & Records Office according to schedule.
  • Direct, evaluate, and assess the learning experience of the students in accordance with adopted curricula and approved procedures.
  • Provide appropriate counsel/guidance to students while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to student success through proactive mentoring and support.
  • Create an inclusive, welcoming classroom environment that supports diverse learning needs.
  • Incorporate career exploration and planning appropriate for justice-involved individuals.
  • Support students in connecting academic skills to future employment and life success.
  • Monitor student progress and provide timely intervention for at-risk students.
  • Navigate dual institutional requirements from both the college and TDCJ.
  • All faculty members are required to participate in professional development activities, department and college committees, and other activities as stated in the Faculty Workload and Responsibilities Policy.
  • Participate in professional development related to correctional education and reentry.
  • Collaborate with TDCJ vocational programs to support student career pathways.
  • Contribute to program development that supports desistance and reduced recidivism.
  • Participate in campus-related committees as needed.
  • Advocate for incarcerated students' educational needs within institutional constraints.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate with department chair to develop efficient teaching schedules across multiple units.
  • Maintain required documentation for travel reimbursement between facilities.
  • Plan effectively to transport necessary teaching materials between units while adhering to TDCJ security protocols.
  • Participate in required trainings at various TDCJ units as needed.
  • Qualified candidates must have a Master's (or higher) degree in Education, Psychology, or a closely related discipline or a Master's (or higher) degree with eighteen (18) graduate hours in Education, Psychology, or a closely related discipline. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills with an emphasis on providing constructive feedback.
  • Demonstrated ability to create supportive learning environments.
  • Understanding of barriers facing incarcerated students and strategies to address them.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to students' academic and non-academic needs.
  • Understanding of correctional education principles and best practices.
  • Ability to create engaging learning experiences with limited technology access.
  • Must be able to pass TDCJ background check and maintain security clearance.
  • Ability to work within strict institutional guidelines while maintaining academic integrity.
  • Willingness to teach without standard technology tools.
  • Reliable personal transportation required for regular travel to multiple TDCJ units.
  • Must maintain valid driver's license and current auto insurance.
  • Willingness to arrange teaching schedule across multiple units to maximize efficiency.
  • Must maintain accurate travel logs and submit timely mileage reimbursement requests.
  • Flexibility to adjust travel schedules based on TDCJ unit requirements and accessibility.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience teaching at a community college.
  • Previous experience teaching in correctional settings.
  • Previous experience teaching Student Success courses at an institution of higher education.
  • Previous experience teaching metacognitive skills and self-regulation to students.
  • Background in adult education or working with non-traditional students.
  • Understanding of criminal justice system and reentry challenges.
  • Experience with trauma-informed educational practices.
  • Knowledge of career pathways and employment opportunities for justice-involved individuals.
  • Track record of utilizing student-centered teaching approaches.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Evidence of participating in student support programs or initiatives.
  • Background in implementing retention strategies in the classroom.
  • Experience with early intervention strategies for struggling students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting student mental health and well-being.
  • Able to design assessments and analyze results to measure learning.
  • Experience teaching with limited technology resources.
