What are the responsibilities and job description for the Media Center Paraprofessional position at Lee County School System?

Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, to assist the school media specialist and certified professional staff in the media center to enable students to effectively use the instructional materials in the center.

The purpose of the media center is to provide information and services to every student and staff member in the school. Community members and parents also seek out resources and services.

Essential Duties

  • Help maintain a friendly cooperative atmosphere for all who enter the media center
  • Administer the circulation desk-checking materials in and out
  • Maintain an orderly, neat, and attractive atmosphere in the media center
  • Provide assistance to students and staff in locating and retrieving materials and resources
  • Performs a variety of support functions including answering the telephone, preparing and sending overdue notices, inspecting books and materials for damage and performing necessary repairs as necessary.
  • Monitor student use of computers and printing
  • Assist with student use of the copy machine
  • Assist staff members with producing materials (lamination, transparencies, book-binding, etc.
  • Shelve and maintain order for materials and resources
  • Update, file, and replace outdated supply catalogs
  • Collect fees, and provide documentation for overdue/lost books
  • Prepare and keep records of all deposits on a regular basis
  • Assist with maintaining routine records and files related to media center activities
  • Assist with materials processing (i.e., labeling, stamping, shelving)
  • Assume responsibility for operation of media center when media specialist is absent or assisting in a classroom or lab
  • Maintain and manage schedules for all computer labs
  • Assist with routine maintenance of audiovisual equipment
  • Assist with maintaining bulletin boards and displays
  • Plan and organize events within the media center and school
  • Assist in maintaining the discipline of students and monitoring student use of electronic media.

Equipment

  • Use standard office equipment, such as personal computers and copiers. In addition, be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Forms, and Gmail.

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
  • Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with all students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.

Qualifications

Qualifications Profile - Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of college level coursework or passing of GACE examination as required by law.
  • Prior experience working with children desirable.
  • Acceptable criminal background check.
  • Physically able to perform assigned duties.
