The Underground Groundman plays a crucial role in supporting the installation and maintenance of underground utilities. Responsibilities
- Assist in the installation and maintenance of underground utilities, including electrical and fiber optic lines.
- Operate construction equipment such as backhoes and rigs safely and efficiently.
- Utilize power tools and equipment for various tasks on the job site.
- Conduct utility locating to prevent damage during excavation activities.
- Perform basic electrical tasks, including using a voltmeter for testing low voltage systems.
- Support fiber splicing operations under the guidance of experienced technicians.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring all tools and equipment are properly stored after use.
- Follow safety protocols and guidelines to ensure personal safety and that of team members on site.
Skills
- Strong mechanical knowledge with the ability to troubleshoot equipment issues.
- Experience operating backhoes and other heavy machinery is preferred.
- Familiarity with power tools and their safe operation.
- Basic understanding of electrical systems, particularly low voltage applications.
- Knowledge of utility locating techniques to identify existing underground infrastructure.
- Ability to assist in fiber splicing processes, with a willingness to learn more advanced skills.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with team members on-site.
- A proactive attitude towards learning new skills and taking on additional responsibilities as needed.
