Responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the Village’s music program, which contributes to the diversity of the Village’s overall Lifestyles program. Supportive of the Village’s mission, values, and service / hospitality (PRIDE) expectations. Completes training hours as required per policy.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Develops musical activity programming which engages independent living residents in mentally stimulating and nurturing social activities, contributing to the residents’ overall wellness.
  • Markets and promotes music programs to achieve a high level of participation and recruits participants. Maximizes promotion to residents through a variety of JKV communication tools.
  • Identifies and selects music and musical material for groups and adapts as needed to develop resident talent.
  • Organizes and directs Village-run musical groups to maintain quality performance level of all Village music groups.
  • Manages rehearsals leading up to the performances.
  • Coordinates marketing of the music concerts with Village marketing and communications.
  • Manages all aspects of Village music program resident concerts, including working with event set-up staff on rehearsal and performance set-up needs during performances.
  • Recruits and oversees accompanists for the Village-run music groups and accompanies the groups as needed on the piano.
  • Identifies the need for musical instruments and supplies for the music program and proposes purchases as needed.
  • Maintains tuning schedule and arranges for maintenance of Village pianos and bells or any other instruments that fall under the Village-run music program.
  • Evaluates the donation requests of musical instruments to JKV as needed.
  • Adheres to all safety regulations and requirements.
  • Ability to handle stress and get along with others within the workplace and with customers outside the department.
  • Ability to maintain acceptable standards of workplace conduct.

The responsibilities described above represent the primary responsibilities of the job. Other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor as warranted by business needs. The incumbent is expected to perform all assigned responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education :

  • Bachelor’s degree in music or music education required.
  • Emphasis in vocal performance or choral conducting is preferred.
  • Licenses / Certifications :

  • This job requires a valid driver’s license and proof of auto insurance.
  • Knowledge and Skills (required unless otherwise noted) :

  • Ability to play the piano in order to accompany Village music groups as needed.
  • Must be able to read and transpose music and accompany choral groups on the piano. Expert keyboarding skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including patience, sense of humor and conversational skills.
  • Trained ear for music, singing expertise, and a passion for others’ musical talents.
  • Understanding of range of voices for seniors.
  • Ability to plan rehearsals, concerts, and performances.
  • Ability to select appropriate music for seniors.
  • Strong organizational skills, including meeting deadlines and following through.
  • Strong teamwork, customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities, including managing and maintaining schedules for multiple music groups.
  • Intermediate level skills using Microsoft Windows and computer applications such as Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, handbooks, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write simple sentences, paragraphs, and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Experience :

  • One to three years of experience as a choral musical leader / director.
  • Previous experience working with older adults preferred.
  • SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings.
  • Frequent driving of personal vehicle around the campus and to other locations (to purchase supplies, pick up refreshments, etc.).
  • Exposed to loud instruments.
  • Expected to work occasional weekends, as needed.
  • Environmental stress may be associated with these settings, as well as potential exposure to communicable disease.
  • The associate is required to function around individuals with challenged mental capacities.
  • All associates may be called upon to assist other departments in a declared emergency situation.
  • Physical and Mental Demands

  • Frequent sitting is required.
  • Occasional change of position is required.
  • Frequent balancing is required.
  • Frequently reaches with hands and / or arms.
  • Must be able to speak and hear clearly to give and receive information.
  • An occasional need to lift up to 10 pounds.

    Receives direction from the Lifestyles Manager.

    Gives direction to Volunteers. Makes independent decisions for music program.
