POLICE OFFICER

Division: Leech Lake Tribal Police Department

Reports to: Tribal Police Sergeant

Worksite: Leech Lake Reservation, surrounding counties and City of Cass Lake

Work Hours: Varying Shifts

License/Certification Requirements: POST Board certified or eligible to be POST Board certified. First-aid and CPR training. Valid MN driver's license, current insurance or be insurable.

Summary: Police Officers protect life and property, preserve the peace, prevent offenses, detect and apprehend offenders and help those in need of assistance.

Education Requirements and Experience:

No previous Law Enforcement experience required.

Must have successfully completed; Basic Police Training Program and/or program provided by a Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

At least twenty-one (21) years of age.

Must have sound decision making qualities.

Knowledge of: policy and procedures, tribal, state, local and federal laws.

Knowledge of: tribal and state civil and criminal laws.

Good people skills, leadership skills, and common sense.

Excellent time management, organizational, public relations and communication skills.

Shall undergo annual physical test to ensure physical and medically capability to perform duties of the position without harm to self or others.

Shall undergo psychological test to determine mental fitness for performing duties of this position without harm to self or to others.

Must pass criminal background investigation and shall have no domestic assault or felony convictions.

Must submit to drug/alcohol testing provided by LLTPD.

Maintain all mandatory training to keep POST Board license up to date and active.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Enforcement of Federal Laws, State of Minnesota Statutes and traffic laws, Beltrami, Cass, Hubbard and Itasca County laws, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Laws and Ordinances including Traffic Code, Curfew.

Promote crime prevention and undertake community-policing activities to improve quality of community life. Patrol assigned areas within the Reservation, including all communities, housing areas, roadways and waterways, federal and tribal buildings on foot or in vehicles to check security of property and watch for unusual activity.

Maintain daily log sheets, reports, investigations, citations etc.

Perform community policing by attending Local Indian Council meetings, Drug Task Force meetings, youth dances, pow-wows, school functions etc.

Enforce laws by warning, ticketing, arresting, interviewing suspects, administering breath test for alcohol, disarming aggravated parties, apprehending suspects, transporting detainees to jail, intervene in altercations.

Respond to all calls as assigned including but not limited to felonies and misdemeanors, such as burglary, robbery, larceny, automobile theft, assault, rape and

Maintain a good working relationship with Emergency Medical Technicians, Ambulance Services, IHS Hospital, Health Division and Human Services Division in responding to all emergency calls.

Remain attentive and maintain a good communicative relationship with the citizens of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe.

Stay trained in the proper use of firearms, chemical agents and defensive tactics.

Take a required training for police proficiency and Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and training to retain license.

Investigate criminal offenses and question suspicious people about their activities.

Gather information about crimes and accidents by talking to victims and witnesses and taking notes and statements in writing and by tape.

Direct and re-route traffic at congested areas.

Respond to citizens' complaints and attend scenes of disturbances and reported illegal activities.

Detain and search suspects for weapons and stolen goods or drugs.

Assist injured and distressed people and search for missing or lost people.

Carry out routine clerical work required of the Police Officer position, including processing all police citations and reports to proper courts and authorities. Issue infringement notices for traffic offenses Attend mandatory and refresher training.

Testify in court or before review panels or boards.

Secure scenes of crimes and dangerous situations.

Examine scenes of crimes or accidents to locate and obtain evidence for testing analysis.

Give sympathetic, constructive and reassuring assistance and feedback to victims of crime.

Promote prevention programs, teach gun safety classes and act as roll model for youth.

Ensure the confidentiality of matters of that nature is strictly adhered to.

Ensure all assigned duty gear and equipment is in good working order. Attend all mandatory meetings, training and refresher sessions as required.

Ability to travel in and out of state as necessary.

Understanding and sensitivity to Native American culture.

Adhere to policies governing staff conduct.

Other duties as assigned relating to the Police Officer's position.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the ability to participate fully in: moderate to arduous physical activity including walking, standing and running.

Shall have manual dexterity with free motion of fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips and knee joints.

Arms, hands, legs and feet must function sufficiently to perform duties satisfactorily.

Uncorrected distance vision must be 20/200 and corrected vision must be 20/20 in one eye and 20/30 in the other. Hearing is measured by an audiometer and must not exceed 30 decibels in either ear in the 500, 1000 and 2000Hz ranges.

Must possess emotional and mental stability.

Must not possess any condition that would hinder full, efficient performance of the duties of this position or would cause the Police Officer to be a hazard to self or others.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle in sub-optimal weather and road conditions.

Subject to patrol duty in squad car.

Subject to out-door working conditions.

Subject to internal working conditions Non-smoking environment.
