The Workgroup: The Housing and Communities Workgroup takes a community lawyering approach to litigation and policy advocacy by supporting tenants and tenant organizations to enforce and enact housing laws. It also provides legal support to community-based organizations seeking to build healthy, economically vibrant communities.


The Position: The Housing Justice Policy Manager will work with the Housing and Communities, Eviction Defense, Santa Monica, and Unhoused People’s Justice Project workgroup on housing policy, and other LAFLA workgroups on cross-substantive policy work.


LAFLA is currently accepting applications for the position of Housing Justice Policy Manager.

Qualifications:

  • Public Policy degree preferred;
  • 5 years experience doing policy advocacy;
  • 5 years experience working with non-profit and community based organizations;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Los Angeles housing policy and policymakers;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication;
  • Experience with diverse client population and a commitment to promoting anti-racism;
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice, racial justice, economic justice and a familiarity with the intertwined, intersectional issues that shape material conditions in low-income and communities of color, as well as their structural/root causes.
  • Experience and expertise on a variety of housing policy matters impacting poor and low income populations;
  • Ability to manage multiple active matters simultaneously; and
  • Willingness to work beyond a minimum 7.0 hour workday, including evening and weekend meetings and events, and workweeks in excess of 35 hours when caseload or other obligations so necessitate.

Examples of Duties:

  • Working closely with advocates, develop policy briefs, policy options, comment letters as needed;
  • Develop and maintain community relationships including neighborhood leaders, other nonprofit agencies, government officials and employees, and others.
  • Advocate for local, state and federal policy changes regarding all housing matters;
  • Develop training materials to educate staff, community partners, clients and policy makers;
  • Work with advocates and coalition partners to inform power mapping and strategies to advance policy goals;
  • Lead and facilitate advocates and coalitions related to housing policy;
  • Actively participate in coalition, network and relevant meeting spaces;
  • Attend hearings and meetings to provide testimony, share policy positions and build relationships with policymakers;
  • Work with other internal workgroups on cross-substantive policy issues;
  • Supervise/mentor housing policy work of other advocates; and
  • Lead internal policy team and assist with training advocates on policy advocacy.

HYBRID WORK SCHEDULE– LAFLA advocates are working on a hybrid work schedule, with the ability to work remotely up to half the week, if preferred, after the probationary period. The successful candidate must be local and willing to work from the assigned LAFLA office.
