The Legal Aid Foundation of Tallahassee is seeking a dedicated and compassionate attorney to join our dynamic team. This role provides an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by delivering high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income individuals and families in the Tallahassee area. The attorney will address various civil legal matters, including housing, family law, landlord/tenant issues, wills/estates, probate, and consumer issues. Key Responsibilities- Client Advocacy: Provide advice and counsel and/or representation to low-income and underserved populations in civil legal matters.
- Consultations: Conduct initial client interviews to evaluate legal issues and determine service needs.
- Court Representation: Advocate for clients during hearings, mediations, and other legal proceedings as required.
- Legal Research & Documentation: Research legal issues, draft pleadings, motions, and briefs, and prepare for hearings and trials.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other senior staff attorney, support staff, and community organizations to enhance service delivery.
- Community Engagement: Participate in bi-monthly mobile law clinics to offer free legal consultations.
- Case Management: Work closely with our intake coordinator to maintain organized case files and documentation in compliance with organizational policies and ethical standards.
- Professional Development: Engage in ongoing training, supervision, and mentorship provided by senior attorney.
Required:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admission to the Florida Bar or eligibility for admission shortly after hire.
- Strong commitment to social justice and public interest law.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong legal research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with legal research tools and Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred:
- Prior legal experience in civil law or public interest law (including internships or clerkships).
- Experience working with diverse populations and community organizations.
- Competitive salary designed to offset typical benefit-related expenses.
- One-year contract starting at $78,000 annually with high potential for renewal and salary advancement.
- Hybrid position (35 hours per week).
