What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Attorney - Eviction Protection Project position at Legal Aid of Arkansas?
Staff Attorney (4), Eviction Protection Project – Central, Eastern, Southern, and Western Arkansas.
Legal Aid of Arkansas is a public interest, not-for-profit law firm dedicated to assuring equal access to justice in civil matters for low-income Arkansans. Legal Aid’s advocates provide counsel in housing preservation, domestic violence prevention, economic justice, and consumer protection.
Legal Aid has four open positions for mission-oriented attorneys to have an immediate and profound impact on housing in Arkansas by focusing on eviction mitigation, education, and defense. Positions may be in Little Rock, El Dorado, West Memphis, Hot Springs, Pine Bluff, Fort Smith, Jonesboro, or other communities yet to be determined.
The Eviction Protection Litigation attorneys provide services to tenants with low incomes who are at risk of losing their housing, working closely with Legal Aid’s statewide Housing Practice/Fair Housing Groups. Frequent travel related to work activities is required and some occasional evening or weekend time to attend training, meetings, or outreach activities.
Attorneys will provide direct legal advocacy, ranging from legal advice and brief legal assistance to negotiations and full legal representation of low-income tenant households facing eviction and potential homelessness. Attorneys, with the support of case managers, will help tenants with applications for rental assistance or other resources via local community action and not for profit agencies, municipalities, and state agencies. Attorneys will engage in outreach to educate tenants, advocates, and providers on the many issues and resources that promote housing stability. Attorneys for these positions are expected to be able handle a high-volume practice.
Arkansas Bar Admission or eligibility for reciprocity is required, though individuals sitting for the February 2025 bar may be considered. Previous litigation experience is strongly preferred. Applicants must reside in, or be willing to relocate to, the state of Arkansas or contiguous counties and have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel throughout the state to represent clients. Attorney positions are exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
The salary range is $57,491 - $88,536, depending on experience, with an additional stipend for management positions. Legal Aid offers health and dental insurance, retirement, Supreme Court and bar association dues, CLE, position-related travel reimbursement and per diem, student loan repayment assistance, and other benefits.
