Under the direction of the Office Manager, the Legal Assistant should be capable of greeting and screening clients, conducting initial interviews with LABG’s clients, and preparing legal documents with guidance, etc... The Legal Assistant should have considerable knowledge of office functions and professionalism in the workplace.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Under general supervision from the Office Manager or designee, the Legal Assistant I will:
1. Answer telephones, take messages, direct calls, and provide information to callers.
2. Greet visitors to the office and schedule appointments.
3. With the assistance of assigned attorneys, screen clients and make referrals to in-house staff and others.
4. Open and close files and maintain the case filing system.
5. Provide word processing support, compose letters and draft simple court pleadings as required.
6. Interact with clients, other staff members, service providers, and court and administrative officials in a professional, appropriate, collegial, and cooperative manner. Establish and maintain relationships with clients to establish trust and obtain accurate and complete information.
7. Actively participate in staff and planning meetings, task forces, and trainings if required.
8. Perform basic client eligibility screening.
9. Complete and perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
1. Must hold at least a High School diploma and/or some secretarial training.
2. Must possess the ability to clearly and accurately communicate verbally and in writing and have a pleasant telephone demeanor.
3. Must be able to use office and computer technology, including case management and word processing software.
4. Must be able to meet the following physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodation:
a. Sit, walk, stand, use hands to manipulate, handle, feel, or control items or equipment.
b. Reach with hands and arms.
c. Climb stairs.
d. Talk, and hear.
e. See and be able to read and write legal and other documents.
f. Occasionally lift and move objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
5. Must be able to travel to courthouses, trainings and other events.
