The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. (LASMNY) is a non-profit public interest law firm. We provide free legal information, advice and representation to people who are unable to afford a lawyer. Our staff provides services in the following, thirteen counties: Broome, Chenango, Cayuga, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, and Otsego. In addition, our Agricultural Worker Program (AWP) services the entire New York State.
MISSION STATEMENT
LASMNY’s mission is to provide free legal assistance to low-income people facing civil legal problems that impact the basic needs of life. Through legal advice, emergency legal services and legal representation, we help low-income people stabilize their finances, protect themselves and their children from domestic violence, obtain access to healthcare, avoid homelessness as a result of wrongful evictions, protect the family home from foreclosure and increase household income. We also target specific vulnerable populations with our services, such as senior citizens, victims of domestic violence, people with disabilities, refugees and immigrants, and veterans.
Job Summary
Oversee LASMNY’s eviction diversion fund program, including reviewing applications for assistance and the terms of settlement agreements for compliance with LASMNY policy and OTDA regulations.
Essential Job Functions
Manage litigation expense and reimbursement requests. Oversee escrow account management and other operations-related programs. Prepare monthly and quarterly reports to funding sources. Review travel vouchers and reimbursement expense report requests for accuracy, completeness and in compliance per LASMNY’s travel policy requirements. Oversee coordination of annual audit. Review grant applications for eviction defense programs. Implement Accounts Payable (A/P) and Account Receivable (A/R) functions. Develop monthly and quarterly reports to funding sources. Prepare, input, and analyze cash receipt and general journal entries into the general ledger. Reconcile checking and saving accounts. Prepare Forms 1099 and 1096. Examine, maintain, and update inventory records every two (2) years. Examine and evaluate financial data for accuracy, identifies problems and supports day-to-day operations. Analyze company cash flow analysis including, but not limited to, tracking cash flow activities, preparing reports, and preparing information for management. Prepare housing know your rights materials and present at community outreach events. Represent tenants in eviction defense and housing stability matters. Comply and ensure that all Legal Services Corporation (LSC) and LASMNY policies, procedures and grant based reporting requirements are met. Work for a non-profit legal organization. Handle direct client work including conducting client interviews. Mediate and negotiate dispute resolutions. Perform needs assessment analyses. Employ motion practice. Engage in housing law related legal proceedings. Utilize LexisNexis to conduct regulatory legal research.
Job Qualifications
Juris Doctor (JD) or Master of Laws (LLM) Degree and one (1) year of experience
in position offered or related position including experience w orking for a non-profit legal organization; h andling direct client work including conducting client interviews; m ediating and negotiating dispute resolutions; p erforming needs assessment analyses; employing motion practice; e ngaging in housing law related legal proceedings; and u tilizing LexisNexis to conduct regulatory legal research.
