Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Staff Attorney to join our team in our Appeals Bureau.
- Be admitted to practice law in NYS with at least seven (7) years trial and negotiation experience, or (2) years criminal appellate experience.
- Have excellent case evaluation/assessment skills in order to spot issues for appeal;
- Ability to collaborate with co-workers and communicate with clients;
- Be well versed in felony and grand jury practice as well as the sentencing guidelines;
- Be comfortable handling difficult felony cases where the client is serving significant state incarceration;
- Be comfortable reading lengthy transcripts and court records;
- Be proficient at legal research and the drafting of necessary briefs;
- Be able to work independently, efficiently manage an active caseload, and meet multiple deadlines;
- Be able to meet regularly with, and work under the supervision of, a Bureau Chief and Deputy Bureau Chief;
- Be able to travel to the Cohalan Courthouse in Central Islip as well as the Riverhead Courthouse as needed;
- Be able to travel to Brooklyn and other locations in New York State for oral arguments, and to visit incarcerated clients;
- Be adept at and available to advise attorneys during litigation on legal issues that arise;
- Be willing to take on challenges and be part of a dynamic team;
- Have a strong commitment to public defense and serving marginalized communities.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $95,000.00 - $105,000.00 per year
