Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) fights poverty and seeks racial, social and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers. For over 50 years, we have challenged systemic injustices that trap people in poverty and provided legal services that help our clients meet basic needs for housing, income and economic security, family and immigration stability, education, and health care. LSNYC is the largest civil legal services provider in the country; our staff of more than 600 people in neighborhood-based offices and outreach sites across all five boroughs helps hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers annually. We partner with scores of community-based and client-run organizations, elected officials, public agencies, pro bono lawyers, and the courts to maximize our effectiveness. Our work fights discrimination and helps to achieve equity for all low-income New Yorkers.

LSNYC employees have numerous opportunities for growth and professional development, including access to our internal Justice Learning Center, which provides opportunities to earn free CLEs and gain experience as a trainer. Further, LSNYC prides itself on its Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) efforts and aims to create a work environment where everyone can bring their full selves to the work.

Queens Legal Services (QLS) fights poverty and seeks racial, social and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers. We are a part of Legal Services NYC, the nation's largest civil legal aid provider. We are currently accepting intern applications for Summer 2024 in the following programs:

  • The Access to Education Project provides legal support to children and their families with special education matters, including the administrative hearing process, and in disciplinary matters.
  • The DV/Family Law Advocacy Project provides legal and support services to survivors of intimate partner violence with family legal matters pending in Queens courts.
  • The Government Benefits Project provides advice and legal representation to clients applying for or continuing to receive many types of public benefits, including SNAP, Medicaid & Medicare, Social Security Disability, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
  • The Homeowner & Consumer Rights Project represents homeowners in foreclosure proceedings and in matters arising from predatory lending, tax liens, deed theft, and reverse mortgages, as well as assisting homeowners with estate planning to secure intergenerational wealth. We also assist consumers with debt collection issues such as student loans, nursing home debt, and credit card collection lawsuits.
  • The Housing Rights Project (Universal Access to Counsel) fights to preserve affordable housing and advocates on behalf of low-income tenants facing eviction. We also represent tenants in affirmative litigation seeking repairs and administrative proceedings to challenge rent increases or reduced services in rent-regulated buildings.
  • The Immigration Advocacy Project assists immigrants with humanitarian-based immigration applications (e.g. VAWA, U & T visas, SIJS, asylum) as well as with naturalization, family-based petitions, and removal defense.
  • The LGBTQ/HIV Project provides advice and direct legal representation to members of the LGBTQ community and people living with HIV/AIDS in a wide range of civil practice areas, including public benefits, anti-discrimination, housing, family law, and access to medical care.

Broadly speaking, interns will conduct client interviews, investigate and research cases, attend court and administrative proceedings with attorneys, and write memoranda of law. Interns may also work closely with community partners and provide know your rights clinics, workshops and legal education programs.

QLS is an equal opportunity employer with a strong commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) for our staff and the people we serve. We welcome and encourage applications from candidates of color, women, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ community. Please indicate in your cover letter the practice areas for which you'd like to be considered. Decisions are made on a rolling basis, and we recommend that you apply early.
