Description

The Maritime Systems Division (MSD) of Leidos develops, integrates, and deploys advanced technology solutions that address existing and emerging maritime missions for a range of customers across the Department of Defense (DoD). Our ability to compete in the global market requires extraordinary technology, talented employees, and a relentless pursuit of continuous improvement aimed at operational excellence. In that regard, it is imperative for us engage an exceptional professional as a Lean Manufacturing Engineer at our Lynnwood, WA facility.

Primary Responsibilities

As a Lean Manufacturing Engineer, you possess a relentless appetite for setting in motion and steadily optimizing a broad and complete set of lean enterprise methodologies beyond the expectations of a typical world-class organization. You are a key member of a team who will champion the transformation, sustainment, and continuous improvement of all systems affecting the manufacturing cycle (including the supply chain) for both new and existing products. Your primary job responsibilities include:

  • Acting to eliminate the wasteful practices of Muda, Muri and Mura with specific emphasis on elimination of the 7 wastes, the removal of unevenness in operations, and the abatement of overburden on people and equipment.
  • Ensuring an orderly workplace through a formal 5S program, including visual cues to achieve more consistent operational results.
  • Identifying value and performing VSM to understand the sequence of activities and information necessary to produce products in order to identify and eliminate waste in the value stream.
  • Calculating takt times and creating cycle time bar charts along value streams as a data driven process, while recognizing reduced cycle time as the primary lean objective.
  • Achieving continuous one-piece flow within value streams, with particular emphasis on eliminating the wasteful traditional processes of batch production.
  • Leading a formal Kaizen initiative while implementing the PDCA process and ensuring total employee involvement. This work includes the establishment of a Kaizen wall to celebrate the success of Kaizen events.
  • Applying lean cellular manufacturing design concepts including U-shaped work cells and POUS to reduce waste, achieve balance, and provide the continuous flow of value-added work.
  • Implementing a plant wide SMED methodology to reduce set-up time with rapid changeover techniques, enabling reduced floor space and achieve a variation of product builds in small lots to match demand.
  • Adopting right-sized machine selection techniques to dismantle process-focused departments with product-focused value streams for shortened cycle times, rapid changeover and higher OEE.
  • Employing the complete set of lean processes to create and maintain the overall lean plant layout whereby an observer can identify world-class operations at a glance.
  • Committing to achieving perfection through risk-based thinking and the application of QATS processes enhanced by prevention techniques including Jidoka and Poka-Yoke methods.
  • Conducting cadenced PFMEA events to proactively anticipate, resolve potential process problems than can be prevented through QATS, Jidoka and Poka-Yoke techniques.
  • Performing DFA, DFM and LDFMA exercises to optimize design for assembly, manufacture and cycle time, including the design and realization of tooling and test fixtures.
  • Creating and instituting a TPM process to ensure every machine in the production process is always ready to perform its required tasks with the aim of continuous improvement of OEE.
  • Achieving an overall pull system within value streams and across the factory by applying formal Heijunka and Kanban methods as visual signaling systems to trigger action.
  • Employing Group Technology process mapping techniques such that the overall plant layout can be organized by product families rather than by operational function.
  • Creating Standard Work definitions describing value streams, thereby allowing virtually anyone to perform the work without any variation in the desired output including set-up, takt time, cycle time, staffing, methods, materials, equipment and documentation.
  • Practicing Visual Factory techniques to create a structured work environment where normal operating conditions have been predefined and abnormal conditions can be quickly identified and remedied.
  • Posting and communicating a Flexible Workforce skills matrix to proactively streamline the flow along value streams to inhibit siloes of skillsets and achieve cross-training.
  • Publishing a weekly Radar Chart that reports the maturity growth achieved for each tool in the lean toolbox.
