Salary Range for 18 and over is $15.00 - $19.84
Minimum Starting Wage for 16 is $13.00
Mandatory Training for this position starts on May 27, 2025
Job Summary:
A Day Camp Counselor is responsible for creating a fun, safe, and engaging environment for campers aged 5-12. Counselors lead group activities, supervise campers throughout the day, and promote positive social interactions. They ensure camper safety, facilitate games, arts & crafts, sports, and team-building exercises, and act as positive role models. Counselors must be energetic, patient, and adaptable while working in a fast-paced outdoor and indoor setting. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

Facilitate and participate in scheduled activities, including games, crafts, swimming, and outdoor play.

Assist in preparing materials and setups for planned activities.

Adapt to changes in the daily schedule as directed by the Group Leader or Coordinator.

Supervise campers during all camp activities, including indoor and outdoor programs, swim days, and field trips.

Maintain constant head counts and safety checks to ensure camper well-being.

Monitor camper behavior, promoting teamwork, respect, and inclusion.

Address minor behavioral issues with patience and escalate concerns to the Group Leader or Coordinator when necessary.

Administer first aid as needed and contact emergency medical personnel in critical situations.

Document and report accidents or incidents promptly in ePACT, ensuring proper follow-up with the Group Leader or Coordinator.

Greet parents/guardians warmly during drop-off and pick-up, ensuring a positive first impression.

Refer all parent concerns or questions to the Group Leader or Coordinator.

Be aware of campers' medical and safety needs based on ePACT summaries provided by leadership.

Notify the Group Leader of any concerns or emergencies related to camper health or safety.

Follow directives from the Group Leader and Camp Coordinator regarding activity implementation and safety.

Provide feedback on camper experiences to enhance programming.

Assist the Group Leader in developing activity and craft ideas for the following week's activity calendar.

Attend weekly staff meetings and training sessions to review procedures, expectations, and camper needs.

Participate in weekly Monday morning group meetings with the Group Leader(s).

Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications:

Applicants must be 16 years of age or older in compliance with Illinois Child Labor Laws and the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Previous experience as a camp counselor or in a teaching/childcare role is preferred.

Ability to maintain high energy and engagement throughout the camp day while working independently and following program guidelines.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to adapt to various situations and participant needs.

Commitment to scheduled program times and training sessions.

First Aid/CPR/AED certification within 90 days of hire.
Work Environment:
The work environment for Day Camp Counselor is dynamic, engaging, and physically active, requiring flexibility and adaptability to meet the demands of a camp setting.
Work will take place in a variety of locations and environments, both indoors and outdoors, depending on the scheduled activities. Staff must be able to spend most of their time outdoors during the camp season, tolerating various weather conditions such as heat, humidity, and rain.
On swimming days, staff are required to actively participate in the pool with campers, ensuring safety, supervising activities, and fostering a positive experience. This includes being in the water during designated swim times.
Physical activity is a core aspect of the job. Staff will frequently participate in active games, outdoor exploration, and hands-on crafts while also being responsible for the physical setup and takedown of equipment and supplies. This includes moving tables, chairs, sports equipment, and other materials as needed.
