  • Experience managing staff at multiple levels.
  • Experience managing projects greater than $100 million

Additional Qualifications And Skills

  • Professional Accreditation(s) in Sustainability (CPHC, LFA)
  • Experience working in an Academic or Government organization

Regulatory Approvals

  • Responsible for understanding compliance and regulations with all authorities. Oversees the submissions to jurisdictional authorities for permitting. Ensures compliance with regulations and all authorities having jurisdiction. Oversees and may arranges for all jurisdictional authorities’ inspection necessary to secure final approval for projects, as necessary.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations for underground construction, environmental standards, and energy efficiency; preferably in the City of Boston and the City of Cambridge.

Leadership And Communication

  • Achieves goals through the management and leadership of others
  • Ensures the strategic direction of HCP is understood and executed through operational or strategic management skills
  • The ability to lead cross-functional teams, communicate with stakeholders (Schools, business units, engineers, contractors, faculty, community members, and government entities), and manage client relationships.
  • The ability to mentor junior HCP staff
  • Success in this position will require the development of strong internal/institutional relationships as well as on the ground experience, working closely with A&E partners.
  • Leads through influence rather than through authority.
  • Ability to thrive within a team structure.
  • Ability to work with diverse constituencies.
  • Field experience on construction sites is desirable.

Problem-Solving And Analytical Skills

  • Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge within scope of work. Problems are resolved through abstract and conceptual analysis and require innovative thinking and problem solving that impacts two of the three dimensions of management at the business sub-segment level operations, finance, or human capital Strong analytical skills to troubleshoot issues with the system design, installation, and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams and pilot/innovate solutions.

Technology

  • Experience with project management scheduling software
  • Experience researching and identifying emerging technologies in the sustainability domain, such as renewable energy, carbon capture, smart grids.
  • Develop strategic roadmaps for integrating new technologies into existing sustainability programs and operations.
  • This position will require being on-site for a minimum of 3 days per week and may require being on-site 5 days per week depending on project activities
  • Skills in interpreting architectural and construction contracts.
  • Ability to negotiate and resolve confrontational issues as they arise.

Harvard Capital Projects (HCP) is an internal resource for the Harvard community providing project management services across the entire campus. HCP works collaboratively with a variety of Harvard Schools and Departments, providing project management services for large and small projects including new buildings, renovations, and accessibility and infrastructure upgrades. HCP prides itself on providing its clients with the highest value services.

This position will report to the Managing Director of Capital Projects and will be part of the senior staff. The position manages staff and workload related to the planning design and construction of ground-up projects and adaptive re-use/repositioning of existing buildings.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

Project Management

Responsible for the management of staff including assistant project managers, project managers, and senior project managers. This position manages the hiring, onboarding, performance management, career growth and development of staff. Creates and fosters an environment of open communication and regular feedback.

Acts as resource and point of escalation for staff managing complex challenges with clients/projects/activities.

Responsible for moderate financial/external risk.

Assesses and forecasts strategic work plans for immediate work group; may recommend resolutions for strategic issues to direct manager

Leads definition and direction for new or revised services, programs, processes, policies, standards, or operational plans, based upon the business sub-segments long-term strategies

Administers business unit policies that directly affect employees and recommends policy changes for work group or wider team; may have the authority to make exceptions to policies and procedures under guidelines that require judgment and discretion on issues of importance

Oversee the work of a team or teams through levels. Provides guidance to direct reports within the latitude of established policies Manages the coordination of the activities of multiple groups or departments with responsibility for results, including cost, methods, and staffing

Establishes operational objectives and work plans, and delegates assignments to subordinate managers

Responsible for understanding of capital planning and project funding principles; deep knowledge of how project budgets are developed and maintained through the project lifecycle. Responsible for budgets and has signatory authority for moderate size budget.

Partners with HCP control staff to ensure processes, guidelines, and compliance are being met according to university standards.
