Job Summary
The Associate Director of Counseling and Student Well-being is responsible for leading the administration and delivery of mental health counseling services at Radford University in Roanoke. This role ensures effective resource management, policy implementation, and coordination of clinical services. The Associate Director oversees individual and group therapy, campus-wide clinical outreach, and educational initiatives. Additionally, they serve on the Behavioral Intervention Team and provide critical support to students in crisis.
The Associate Director provides guidance and oversight to student well-being areas, initiatives, events, and services in Roanoke. This role also collaborates with campus and community partners to develop and sustain well-being initiatives that promote a balanced student lifestyle. The position supervises full-time staff and mental health counseling interns and practicum students.
Required Qualifications
The ideal candidate must be a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Licensed Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia or be eligible for licensure upon hire. They should have at least three (3) years of professional clinical experience in a community or college/university counseling setting, with expertise in mental health crisis assessment and individual therapy.
Candidates should have a strong foundation in counseling theories and techniques, along with experience using electronic health record systems. They must demonstrate the ability to assess and intervene in crisis situations effectively and work collaboratively with colleagues. A commitment to cultural awareness and sensitivity in working with diverse populations is essential.
The role requires considerable knowledge of professional ethics and the ability to apply them in practice. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, self-motivation, and an understanding of college student development are critical. The candidate must be adaptable, able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work well under pressure both independently and within a team-oriented environment. Experience in developing and coordinating well-being initiatives and supervising staff—whether students or full-time employees—is also required.
Preferred Qualifications
Five (5) or more years prior professional clinical experience working in a community or college/university counseling setting. Demonstrated ability to provide outreach,
prevention, consultation and seminar presentations. Prior experience providing clinical supervision to interns, graduate students, or other clinical staff.
