Description Of Department

The Office of Experiential Learning (https://ww1.oswego.edu/excel/) at the State University of New York at Oswego offers a variety of opportunities for students to earn academic credit through hands-on experience. SUNY Oswego's experiential learning tradition began with the college's founder, Edward Austin Sheldon. Starting with a required first-year seminar about experiential learning, students are exposed to ways that they can turn their classroom knowledge into action. Programs offered by the department include student employment, service-learning, practicum, internships and co-ops, and other applied learning courses.

The Office of Experiential Learning at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a permanent, full-time Early Experiential Learning Coordinator position.

Compensation: SL-3 (https://www.suny.edu/hr/compensation/salary/) , Minimum salary of $55,000, commensurate with experience plus full New York State benefits package.

Description Of Responsibilities

The Early Experiential Learning Coordinator will provide strategic direction for programs and courses supporting academic transition, student success, retention, and applied learning primarily focused on first-year and sophomore students.

Major Responsibilities Include

  • Collaborate with campus and community partners to create defined applied learning pathways for first-year and sophomore students
  • Coordinate the required first-year seminar program, "Experiential Learning in College" (GST 104)
  • Train, supervise, and provide support for first-year seminar instructors and a Graduate Fellow
  • Recruit and supervise peer Success Coaches and teach a training course, "New Student Transition Theory" (GST 304)
  • Assess and update first-year seminar curriculum based on campus resources and students' needs
  • Teach and provide curricular support for lower-division experiential courses that support students' academic transition and success, career readiness, and identity development
  • Coordinate short-term and practicum experiences that provide students with hands-on experiences in their fields of study
  • Collaborate with campus departments that oversee success programs for first-year and sophomore students (including faculty, Student Orientation and Family Engagement, Advisement Center, Residence Life and Housing, Financial Aid, Student Engagement and Leadership, etc.)
  • Determine the effectiveness of programs through ongoing, systematic assessment
  • Participate in campus-wide committees related to student retention, wellbeing, and success
  • Support the Experiential Learning Team to grow initiatives including career readiness curriculum, student employment, internships, service-learning, and other applied learning experiences

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree at the time of appointment
  • Experience coaching or advising college students
  • Teaching and/or curriculum development at the college or high school level
  • Strong interpersonal, written, verbal communication, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in student affairs, higher ed, student development or equivalent
  • 1-2 years of professional higher education experience
  • Prior experience in experiential learning, new student orientation, first-year experience, advisement, and/or career services
  • Knowledge of transition and student development theories
