Position Summary

The City of Bozeman is now accepting applications for an Engineering Inspector to support our Engineering Team. The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform inspections to ensure compliance with all relevant codes, ordinances, and laws. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the City Engineer, Public Works personnel, consulting engineers, contractors, developers, other City employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment and in the field, involving exposure to a wide variety of weather and terrain conditions.

Work Week: Typically M-F, 8am-5pm

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Performs inspections of City construction and improvement projects, including visiting construction sites, reporting and documenting any non-compliance issues to the project engineer, and ensuring the implementation of any necessary traffic control measures;
  • Enforces contractor compliance with City, County, and State codes, ordinances, and laws;
  • Attends preconstruction conferences for city public works projects;
  • Reviews and compares project documentation, including as-built drawings submitted by consultants, with field notes, construction plans, and in-place installation to ensure the accuracy of all documentation of the new infrastructure;
  • Reviews, approves, and inspects projects for encroachment permits, sidewalk/driveway & curb cut permits, sign installation or change permit, street cut permit, public right-of-way utility occupancy permit, fire service line, and elements of building permits;
  • Assists with oversight of public infrastructure completed by private development;
  • Performs warranty inspections to verify the acceptability of project installation and documentation and takes appropriate measures to ensure that all necessary repairs are completed;
  • Researches subdivision plats, utility section maps, plans and specifications, and other documentation to provide information regarding existing utilities, easements, and other factors involving public works projects for the public, City departments, or consultants;
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • At least two years formal training or education beyond high school in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a closely related field (Bachelor's Degree is preferred); and
  • Some (1-3 years) experience in utilities/public works construction; or
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Substantial knowledge of all relevant Federal, State, and local codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations;
  • Substantial knowledge of construction methods, materials, and practices;
  • Substantial knowledge of the principles and practices of constructing public works projects;
  • Substantial knowledge of factors involved in the safe installation and operation of City utilities;
  • Substantial knowledge of all relevant construction safety rules and regulations;
  • Substantial knowledge of Bozeman City practices, procedures, and organization;
  • Substantial knowledge of department policies, procedures, and programs;
  • Some knowledge of relevant surveying, drafting, and soil testing skills;
  • Some knowledge of and/or experience with GIS or CAD;
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret project specifications, blueprints, construction plans, and other project documentation;
  • Ability to effectively and accurately interpret and enforce all relevant codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations;
  • Ability to effectively complete all necessary reports and documentation;
  • Ability to perform effective inspections of City public works projects and recognize and address any compliance issues that may exist;
  • Ability to effectively enforce construction site safety rules and regulations;
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people, including ones who are angry or disagreeable;
  • Ability to effectively respond to and resolve concerns and questions from the public;
  • Ability to work well in a variety of construction environments and weather conditions;
  • Ability to effectively operate and utilize all relevant equipment;
  • Ability to make quick and accurate calculations;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
  • Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;
  • Consistently performs assignments in accordance with the City’s Core Values of Integrity, Leadership, Service and Teamwork.

Required Special Qualifications

  • Valid Driver's License; must obtain valid Montana Drivers' license within 60 days of employment;
