Description of Work Unit

The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ) is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University ( CSU ). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary

Environmental Compliance Inspections

The Environmental Compliance Specialist position, located at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, is responsible for providing technical support to the U.S. Army Hawaii Environmental ( USARHAW ) Program to include:

Perform site inspections of USARHAW industrial facilities to evaluate the efficiency of their compliance programs. Create and submit reports identifying areas of non-compliance and recommended corrective actions.

Waste Stream Identification And Analysis

Assess and characterize waste streams associated with industrial activities to determine their regulatory status and recommend applicable management requirements.

Waste Management

Assist USARHAW units/activities with managing the waste generated from their operations to include hazardous waste, universal waste, non- RCRA regulated waste, and recyclable materials.

Pollution Prevention

Review procedures and processes to identify new recycling opportunities and provide management recommendations.

Hazardous Material/Waste Spills

Provide support to the USAG -HI Installation Response Team to assist in spill response and cleanup actions.

Hazardous Waste Minimization

Perform site visits and technical review of hazardous material management procedures and waste generating processes to ensure proper management of materials and minimize the unnecessary generation of hazardous waste.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a High School Diploma or GED plus 1 year of experience working in hazardous waste management or similar experience supporting environmental compliance programs.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Three years of experience working in solid and hazardous waste management.
  • Knowledge of and experience with conducting inspections to assess industrial activities’ compliance with applicable environmental regulations.
  • Knowledge of and experience with federal, DoD and/or Army solid and hazardous waste regulations.
  • Experience in hazardous materials management.
  • Experience identifying, characterizing, managing, and minimizing hazardous waste generated at industrial facilities.
  • Experience participating in hazardous material spill response and cleanup operations.
  • Experience writing technical reports and standard operating procedures.
  • Experience working with personal computers and conventional software programs (word processors, spreadsheets, and databases).
  • Experience working in highly structured organizations, such as governmental agencies, the military or corporations, with established lines of authority, procedures, and protocols.
  • Current OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response ( HAZWOPER ) certification.
