Overview

The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.

PCSD is PNNL’s primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy’s Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate's researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.

Responsibilities

The Future Computing Technologies Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory seeks a Ph.D.-level intern for the summer of 2025 with a strong back ground in one or more topic areas, including Fabric Attached Memory (FAM) devices and architectures, data movement protocols, and system-level architecture and design. Data-driven scientific discovery drives the need for increasing efficiencies from the underlying memory subsystem to mitigate the costs associated with rising data volumes. This is particularly true in the cases of emerging and upcoming hardware architectures. Due to the specialized needs and diversity of modern workloads, system components are becoming more modular, allowing flexible disaggregated systems. Specifically, protocols and technologies supporting FAM allow separation of processing and memory systems, expanding the concepts of "shared-memory" paradigm across vast scales.

This internship will entail research and analysis of data movement/communication/security scenarios and intermediate data management for High-Performance Computing (HPC) workloads on state-of-the-art FAM-based systems. Basic concepts pertaining to computer organization, memory hierarchy, performance analysis, and HPC programming models and runtimes are relevant skills.
