The Senior Highway Design Engineer serves as a cornerstone in the development, design, and execution of transportation infrastructure projects, driving initiatives that shape the future of Indiana’s transportation network. This role demands an accomplished engineering professional with deep expertise to lead complex projects, deliver innovative solutions, and ensure the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of Indiana’s transportation system. Salary Statement

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $75,010.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

This position is located in INDOT’s Central Office, Indianapolis.

A Day In The Life

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Planning & Project Management: Ensure milestones, deliverables, and implementation strategies, are achieved. Complete peer reviews of project submittals. Ensure that all plans reflect the scope of services, existing field conditions, appropriate design standards, and sound engineering judgment.
  • Design: Design and develop plans, quantities, estimates, permits, and project documentation for a variety of roadway work types. Including but not limited to small structure replacement, pipe lining, intersection improvements, pavement rehabilitation, and safety improvements.
  • Field Inspection: Organize, conduct, and review engineering investigations and field observations, which have a defined scope.
  • Technical & Data Analysis: Assist in analyzing engineering data and developing technical guidelines, technology initiatives, training course materials and other technical documents.
  • Subject Matter Expert: Provide technical guidance on roadway design and related areas. Keep abreast of current design practices by attending conferences and reading trade publications, research papers, etc. Serve as a resource for others in the Department.
  • Quality Control: Participate in Quality Control / Quality Assurance programs to ensure policy and best practices are actively deployed, analyze field data, and review plans for conformance to design criteria.

What You'll Need For Success

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (civil engineering is preferred but not required) from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited school.
  • Registered Professional Engineers license in Indiana required; exception may be made for individuals with a bachelor's degree in engineering or a bachelor's degree in engineering and an Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification/Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certification working towards becoming a licensed Professional Engineer in Indiana in a lower-level classification.
  • At least four(4) years of experience in engineering (civil engineering is preferred), transportation research or related area.
  • Must have valid Driver's License.
  • Extensive knowledge of and ability to apply civil engineering theories, principles, methods, and procedures to the engineering specialty.
  • Broad knowledge of planning, design, or construction of highway or transportation project features (such as roads, pavement, or traffic structures) in accordance with engineering design and construction standards, principles and methods. 
  • Extensive knowledge of and ability to apply federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and procedures governing incumbents filed of specialization.
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply computer aided design and drafting functions to field of specialization.
  • Ability to prepare and review complex design plans and reports relating to the functional area of specialization.
  • Ability to perform the algebraic, trigonometric, and higher mathematical computations applied to design operations.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
