PLEASE NOTE:  STARTING SALARY INCREASING to $60,000 in JANUARY 2025 for NEWLY SWORN and UP TO $71,643 for SWORN DETENTION WITH PRIOR EXPERIENCE 

Responsible for maintaining care, custody, and control of detainees in the Leon County Detention Facility.  This position helps to maintain the overall safety, security and good order of the facility.  The position exercises judgment and individual initiative in the performance of routine duties and in emergency situations, often without immediate supervision. The position adheres to the agency core values of honesty and integrity, accountability, teamwork, trust and respect and commitment to excellence. To be successful in this position, the employee must demonstrate competency in Florida Model Jail Standards (FMJS), Standard Operational Procedures and LCSO Policies and Procedures, officer safety, knowledge of geographical layout of the Leon County Detention Facility, defensive and control tactics, conflict resolution, general communication skills (both written and oral), inter-personal skills, problem solving and team building skills. 
  1. Completes all assignments and/or special projects to specifications as directed and within the specified time frame, budgetary requirements (if applicable), and applicable agency policies.
  2. Completes, updates, and submits accurate and thorough reports, documents and forms to the appropriate authority/personnel in a timely manner pursuant to applicable state regulations and in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
  3. Reports identified or potential maintenance, safety, and/or non-compliance findings, hazards, and incidents to the appropriate personnel and/or department; and documents the incident/findings and responds as directed or as required.
  4. Removes and returns detainee from and to cell while maintaining control of the detainee and observing officer safety at all times consistent with agency policies.
  5. Escorts visitors, vendors, other personnel on official business to their destination, ensuring their safety and security pursuant to agency policy; and searches visitors as required, locating, seizing, and reporting any found contraband and/or weapons.
  6. Maintains effective and safe care, control, and custody of inmates at all times pursuant to agency and state rules/regulations and policies.
  7. Ensures that the inmates are properly prepared and attired to enter a specific area or leave the facility pursuant to FMJS regulations and agency policies.
  8. Controls, restrains, and subdues detainees by the use of the proper restraining techniques, control device, and/or OC without causing undue pain or injury consistent with FMJS requirements, applicable Statutes, and agency policies; and documents and notifies the appropriate supervisory staff in accordance with agency policies/procedures.
  9. Mediates and successfully resolves disputes between inmates utilizing the minimum force required, implementing or recommending the appropriate disciplinary actions consistent with FMJS regulations and agency policies.
  10. Responds to all inmates incidents in accordance with agency policies/procedures.
  11. Answers inmate questions in a professional manner, referring unanswered questions to the appropriate personnel pursuant to FMJS requirements and agency policies.
  12. Inspects detainee housing and any other areas used by detainees for cleanliness, maintenance, and security deficiencies.
  13. Seizes and reports found contraband/unauthorized items, completes an accurate, concise written report detailing the incident pursuant to FMJS requirements and agency policies, and follows all subsequent agency procedures for processing/routing the contraband and related reports.
  14. Observes work area activities and reports any unusual or abnormal detainee behaviors or physical conditions consistent with FMJS requirements and agency policies.
  15. Conducts thorough investigations of crimes committed in the facility within the scope of their position. 
  16. Conducts thorough pat down searches of inmates (including trustees) locating and seizing any contraband or weapons pursuant to FMJS requirements and in accordance with applicable Statutes and agency policies, and generates and submits the appropriate reports, if required.
  17. Conducts a strip search of the inmate, discovering and removing any hidden contraband in a manner consistent with FMJS requirements, applicable Statutes, and agency policies; locates and confiscates unauthorized detainee property/weapons/contraband consistent with applicable FMJS requirements and agency policies; and searches inmate clothing to locate and confiscate any contraband or weapons pursuant to FMJS requirements and in accordance with agency policies.
  18. Ensures that each inmate's identity is correctly verified prior to movement pursuant to FMJS requirements and in accordance with agency policies; and takes the appropriate remedial action according to agency policies/procedures when discrepancies are discovered.
  19. Observes, documents, and reports any unusual changes in detainee behavior pursuant to FMJS requirements and in accordance with agency policies.
  20. Operates the control panel to safely and securely control ingress/regress and inmate/officer communications pursuant to agency policies.
  21. Conducts a complete and thorough inventory of all keys and/or security equipment in conjunction with oncoming/outgoing shift members to ensure that all keys are accounted for and that all security devices are functioning properly before beginning/completing a shift.
  22. Maintains the security and accountability for any and all keys issued or received pursuant to agency policies and state laws if applicable, ensuring that all keys are returned at the end of the shift in accordance with agency policies if required.
  23. Conducts and if required, accurately documents formal and informal inmate counts; reports formal inmate counts to the designated personnel/station consistent with DJJ/FMJS requirements and agency policies; and initiate appropriate measures to ensure that no movement of inmates occurs during the inmate count and verification except in the event of a medical emergency to ensure the accuracy and validity of the count obtained.
  24. Completes the intake/booking process, including taking photos, fingerprinting, inventory of inmate personal items, issuing initial hygiene/laundry items, placing detainers/holds, notifying other agencies of arrests/holds, verifying all warrant/arrest report information for accuracy, entering arrests into AFIS, writing arrest reports, and when applicable criminal/sex offender registration.
  25. Completes release process, including completing cash bonds, surety bonds and purges; ensuring inmate is properly released according to court orders, such as released on own recognizance, transferred to another agency, time served, release by bond, administrative release, etc.; checking NCIC for wants by 10-29P, and ensuring all property is returned.
  26. Responds to emergency situations during watch as directed by a supervisor, which includes disturbances, medical emergencies, or anytime the safety and security of the cell is threatened, ensuring inmates are ordered to their assigned bunks/cells and locked down as required.
  27. Records and documents all required information in order to correctly maintain and update all housing logs including, if applicable, the 15 or 30 minute watch, single cell restriction, restraint, confinement, and any other applicable logs pursuant to FMJS/DJJ regulations and in accordance with agency policies.

  29. Updates the appropriate log and/or computer program to reflect inmate movement to and from various destinations within/outside the facility.
  30. Updates the key logs, reflecting any and all changes made to keys or locks pursuant to FMJS requirements and agency policies.
  31. Documents all shift activities/incidents/occurrences in the control room log pursuant to FMJS requirements and agency policies.
  32. Updates the property log with all required information as needed.
  33. Supervises and thoroughly searches facility areas in a systematic manner, locating and seizing any contraband and preserving any found evidence in accordance with FMJS applicable regulations and agency policies.
  34. Gives immediate detailed report/information regarding any penetrations/intrusions, security breaches and/or escapes as applicable, in accordance with agency policies, and generates and submits a detailed accurate report of the incident if required pursuant to agency policy.
  35. Reports riots, fights, disorders, or any unusual activities to the appropriate post or supervisor as appropriate, detailing location, type of incident, number of inmates/persons involved, and request for assistance if needed pursuant to agency policies; follows established procedures and/or verbal instructions from authorized supervisors when responding to the situation as appropriate; and submits a detailed accurate report of the incident pursuant to agency policy.
  36. Reports any sabotage, pilferage, or security violations to a supervisor and/or control room as appropriate, in accordance with agency policies, and generates and submits a detailed accurate report of the incident if required pursuant to any applicable regulations and agency policy.
  37. Informs supervisors of events and activities in progress.
  38. Performs other related duties as assigned.
  39. Ability to adhere to the standards and principles of the agency's core values and professionally represent the agency.
  40. Ability to conduct active patrolling and monitoring of all areas of the Leon County Detention Facility, which would include the ability to climb stairs.
  41. Prevent penetrations, escapes and security breaches involving inmates or other unauthorized personnel.
  42. Respond to a "man down" alarm in a quick and efficient manner.
  43. Demonstrate efficiency in fingerprinting persons manually and/or by using electronic fingerprint system.
  44. Testify at trials, hearings, grand juries and/or depositions truthfully, accurately and professionally.
  45. Adhere to and apply proper principles of officer safety.
  46. Ability to perform all functions of the job classification without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the work place.

  • Citizen of the United States
  • Must not have been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement, nor have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. 
  • Must maintain a primary residence within Leon County or a county adjacent to Leon (Wakulla, Liberty, Gadsden, and Jefferson Counties in Florida, Thomas and Grady Counties in Georgia) and satisfy all disqualification factors outlined in the application for employment.
  • Must maintain a valid Driver's License
  • Correctional Certification or ability to become certified in the State of Florida

Special Requirements-Ability to behave respectably and with utmost integrity even when off duty. Shift work (days or nights) with rotating days off including working weekends, nights, holidays, and/or overtime; May be required to respond for any critical incident, manmade or natural; must be able to appropriately wear and operate a self-contained breathing apparatus
