What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Crossing Guard position at Leon County Sheriff's Office?
This part-time non-sworn position performs basic safety enforcement and guidance to pedestrians and students in designated school zones in Leon County. This position exercises independent judgment often without direct supervision. This position adheres to the agency core values of honesty and integrity, accountability, teamwork, trust and respect and commitment to excellence. To be successful in this position, the employee must demonstrate competency in safety awareness, general knowledge of traffic enforcement laws related to school zones, general communication skills, inter-personal skills and customer service skills.
- Ability to recognize safety hazards and react timely to help prevent incidents.
- Ability to stop and resume traffic flow with sign and hand signals or electronic traffic device.
- Ability to direct pedestrians and students to remain out of traffic until it is safe to cross.
- Ability to escort pedestrians and students across the street or intersection safety.
- Ability to work closely with others as a team.
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
- Ability to provide professional customer service skills to both the public and agency members.
- Ability to adhere to the agency's core values and comply with General Orders.
- Ability to report to work timely, consistently and as scheduled.
- Ability to perform all functions of the job classification without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the work place.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Position must have independent transportation to and from the assigned school.
- Assignment is approximately 2-3 hours per school day with no assigned hours during school recognized holidays and summer break.
