Established in the Blue Ridge foothills of North Carolina in 1963, Leonard Buildings and Truck Accessories is a manufacturer and distributor whose product lines include storage buildings, cargo and utility trailers, truck covers, truck and van accessories, carports, playhouses, chicken coops, and dog houses. We serve our residential, commercial, fleet, and government customers through our 150 retail store locations in eighteen states, supported by our corporate offices (in Mount Airy, NC, and Cobden, IL), distribution centers, and strategically located manufacturing facilities.


Job Summary:

The Manager, Fleet & Maintenance is based at the Leonard Distribution/Plant location, with operations in the U.S. and has overall responsibility for overseeing the management, maintenance, and optimization of the fleet team by ensuring the reliability and efficiency of Leonard vehicles, promoting safety, and managing the overall fleet strategy. This position reports directly to the Director of Logistics & Distribution and has direct oversight of 8 mid-level managers and indirect leadership of a total team of 37 through a multi-tiered structure, including drivers and maintenance staff.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements strategies for the efficient management and utilization of the company's fleet of vehicles.
  • Plans and coordinates regular maintenance, servicing, and repairs of fleet vehicles to ensure their optimal performance and safety.
  • Develops and maintains a preventive maintenance schedule to proactively address vehicle issues and avoid breakdowns.
  • Manages and maintains an inventory of spare parts and essential supplies required for vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  • Ensures that all fleet vehicles comply with relevant regulations and pass required inspections and certifications.
  • Monitors and controls fleet-related costs, including maintenance, repairs, fuel, and parts, to optimize budget utilization.
  • Coordinates with external service providers and suppliers for vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  • Collects and analyzes data on fleet performance, maintenance costs, and fuel consumption to inform decision-making.
  • Implements and enforces safety policies and procedures to promote safe driving practices and prevent accidents.
  • Develops vehicle replacement plans based on age, mileage, and maintenance costs to maintain a modern and efficient fleet.
  • Collaborates with the training department to provide driver training on vehicle maintenance and safety practices.
  • Explores and implements environmentally friendly initiatives, such as vehicle eco-driving programs, to reduce the fleet's carbon footprint.

Competencies (skills, knowledge, and abilities):

  • Strong leadership and team management skills with direct oversight of 8 mid-level managers and indirect leadership of a total team of 37 through a multi-tiered structure, including drivers and maintenance staff.

  • In-depth knowledge of vehicle maintenance practices, fleet management software, and relevant regulations.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills to lead a team of maintenance staff.
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities to address fleet-related challenges and optimize maintenance operations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with internal teams and external vendors.
  • Organizational skills to manage fleet maintenance schedules, records, and inspections efficiently.
  • Proficiency in using fleet management software and MS Excel for data analysis and reporting.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices related to fleet operations.
  • Adaptability to handle unexpected breakdowns and urgent maintenance needs.
  • Flexibility to work in a dynamic logistics environment with changing priorities.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, operations management, logistics, or a related field.
  • 7 years of progressive experience in fleet and maintenance management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • CDL not required but preferred. Obtaining a CDL may be requested based on operational needs.

Travel:

This position requires travel once per month for up to a week.
