JOB TITLE: Instructional Coach                         LOCATION: Elementary, Middle & High Schools

JOB CATEGORY: License/Professional                PAY GRADE: Grade 1-5 (5 additional days)

FLSA: Exempt                                                  IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Principal

 

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

The Instructional Coach collaborates with administration and teachers in implementing effective classroom instruction through student-centered, job-embedded, and on-going professional development. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

  1. Assists teachers in designing high quality instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, current best instructional practices, student needs, and curriculum goals.
  2. Engages in coaching cycles with all teachers using a student-centered coaching model (observing, modeling, conferencing, co-teaching) to develop and ensure strong classroom management, instructional and assessment skills.
  3. Facilitates professional development for all teachers, individually and in groups.
  4. Participates in subject/grade level/assessment meetings.
  5. Meets regularly with building-level administrators regarding student progress and instructional needs.
  6. Assists with curriculum development and resource creation for coaching cycles/teacher support.
  7. Maintains records of instructional coaching and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information. 
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching including demonstrated ability to  understand and apply the curriculum framework in all subjects and grade levels.  Knowledge of the Adult Learning Theory and best practices in professional development.  Thorough understanding of the student-centered coaching model.  Knowledge of elementary, secondary and/or special education principles, practices and procedures. Understanding of school division rules, regulations and procedures.  Ability to work independently within the scope of the job description and establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, administration, and parents.  Ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited college or university and possess or be eligible to acquire appropriate license(s) and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.  A minimum of five years experience as a general education teacher and a Master’s Degree is preferred. Candidate must possess demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, staff, administrators, and parents. Candidate must possess good moral character and are expected to be a role model, in and out of the school.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS

Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classrooms, gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 30 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment and/or materials weighing up to approximately 40 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities may be required. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. Regular instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with staff members, administration, and parents is required.  

 

EVALUATION

Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities by building Principal.
