POSITION PURPOSE:
This position responsible for providing safe, quality swim instruction to our members, in a group, camp (summer only), or one on one setting. The candidate must be able to have a flexible schedule. Under the direction of the Aquatics Program Director, the Swim Instructor is responsible for conducting/teaching swimming lesson classes using the Aquatic Program Guidelines. In addition, the incumbent will maintain and ensure the safety of the students at all times.
Know-How:
- Current YMCA or Red Cross Lifesaving Certification or Equivalent Preferred
- CPR & First Aid certifications including adult, child and infant and obstructed airway maneuver
- Attend Swim Instructor Courses as needed
- Communicate responsibly and tactfully to participants, taking into account each individual’s abilities
- Communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances
- Know how to design lesson plans and follow guidelines
Requirements
- Sight, hearing, and speaking
- Standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, sitting
- Lifting and carrying a minimum of 50 lbs
- Pulling a minimum of 100 lbs
- Swimming and tolerance to hot, humid environments and wet conditions
- Tolerance to moderate noise levels
- Dressed professional in appropriate attire for activity that promotes a high standard of morality
Principal Activities:
- Must be able to work at least two (2) days per week. Weekend work may be required as needed
- Prepare and follow lesson plans for assigned class
- Maintain attendance and skill accomplishment records for each class as you teach
- Evaluate swimmers for class level and give certificates at conclusion of course
- Dress appropriately for duty
- Maintain teaching equipment
