Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office is recruiting for an Accounting Technician. Under the general supervision of the Senior Finance Coordinator, this position performs a variety of accounting and administrative duties.
Who We Are
The Lewis & Clark County Sheriff's Office is the chief Law Enforcement agency in Lewis & Clark County, Montana. It is comprised of over 120 employees including sworn officers, detention officers and professional support staff. The Sheriff's Office provides general law enforcement, detention functions, rural fire support and search and rescue operations for the citizens of Lewis & Clark County in a service area of over two million acres. Additionally, this agency provides specialized regional services to the entire county and contract law enforcement to specific areas.
The Sheriff, who is elected by the residents of Lewis & Clark County, is the chief executive officer of the agency. He and his command staff manage the day-to-day investigations, evidence management, civil process and a number of support operations necessary to provide full law enforcement coverage and services for Lewis & Clark County.
Currently, the Sheriff's Office provides regional/resident law enforcement services in Lincoln and Augusta as well as contract law enforcement services at Canyon Ferry Lake during the summer. These services include general patrol services and the D.A.R.E. program, as well as any necessary investigative services.

Duties
- Assists the Senior Finance Coordinator in the management of resources through budget preparations and claims processing;
- Maintains complete financial records;
- Assists with financial reporting with the Accounting and Budgeting offices, and complies with federal, state and local regulations;
- Receives cash, makes deposits, reconciles and prepares monthly balance reports for various funds and trust accounts;
- Prepares and submits requests for funds to various state or federal agencies for contracts;
- Represents the Sheriff’s office in meetings with federal, state, and local officials when necessary to reconcile claims or to determine budgeting needs;
- Processes inmate medical bills:
- Verifies housing status:
- Determines medical reason and responsible parties;
- Works with the Detention Center staff to ensure proper allocations of inmate funds through more than one revenue source;
- Prepares journal vouchers;
- Maintains and reconcile inmate accounts;
- Bills appropriate State, Federal and Local entities for inmate housing and inmate medical;
- Maintains a high level of confidentiality;
- Audits inmate housing reimbursements;
- Acts as a back up to answer phones;
- Performs typing, filing, and other related work as required;
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Work with, and maintain strictest confidence on items of sensitive nature;
- Maintain a computerized Accounting system.
Qualifications
The knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation plus two years post-secondary accounting course work; and two years of increasingly responsible experience involving financial record keeping, preferably in a law enforcement agency, civil office or law office. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Special Requirements
Must pass a background check and pre-employment drug test.
Physical Demands
Duties are generally performed in an office setting where hazards and discomforts are controlled and modifiable. Position requires knowledge and use of typical office equipment including telephone and personal computer. Position requires regular contact with fellow employees and citizens; ability to lift and carry computer and other media equipment; Position may require travel to other sites for meetings.
