The Cowlitz Falls Engineering Intern will provide temporary assistance to the Cowlitz Falls Department with a variety of projects and tasks; including but not limited to field work, office work, assisting with the organization of plant engineering records, and accurately recording and documenting Contractor daily activities.


This is a summer internship position. Must be enrolled in an accredited college program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related major.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.

 

  • Support the Generation Superintendent and Project Engineer who administer/oversee the larger projects and capital work at the Cowlitz Falls Hydroelectric Project. 
  • Support for the project work will include all the typical phases of a project including, but not limited to pre-design, design engineering, procurement, construction, and close-out. 
  • Review technical drawings and specifications, front end contract documents, project financials, project schedules, and project submittals with the Project Team.
  • Document on-going projects by keeping meeting minutes, daily field inspection reports, attending on-site job walks, and capturing work activities through photo/video documentation.
  • Coordinate site access and interface with consulting engineers, contractors, District operations, vendors, and government entities.
  • Develop an understanding of Construction Site safety and assist in monitoring Contractor site safety activities. 
  • Assist the Cowlitz Falls Department in a variety of other tasks associated with the District’s work.
  • Create and maintain accurate records, documents, and reports as directed.
  • Organize and assist the Department with organizing and scanning engineering records such as drawings, operation and maintenance manuals, previous plant work history, and other plant records. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

Education and/or Experience:

Must be enrolled in an accredited college program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related major.

Ability to read and interpret electrical, mechanical, civil, and structural drawings, principles and practices pertaining to hydroelectric plants preferred.

 

Other:

  • Ability to type at least 45 words per minute.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Must be 18 years old and be legal to work in the United States.
  • Cannot exceed more than four (4) summer seasons.
  • Must maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher. 
  • Preference shall be given to applicants currently living in Lewis County.

 

Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations:

Must have a valid Driver’s license.

 

Computer Skills: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in MS Outlook, Excel, and Word. Experience in MS Project, Primavera, and AutoCAD software preferred.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently required to walk, climb stairs, bend, reach, uses hands to finger, handle, or feel, and sit for extended periods of time. Frequently climbs stairs and ladders in excess of 100 feet. Often required to wear and work in different types of personal protective equipment (PPE); work around and over water, in dirty conditions and from heights. Occasionally required to lift and carry up to 40 pounds. Required to speak and hear clearly when communicating over the telephone and in person.

 

Work Environment: 

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to indoor and outdoor environments. Outdoor settings include all types of property and site conditions, including open spaces, timberlands, flat and hilly terrain, active construction sites and working over/around water and other hazards associated with dams and powerhouses. Indoor settings include office and industrial sites that can involve cramped spaces, moving machinery, etc. Individuals may be exposed to hazardous conditions, including but not limited to obstacles, heights, open trenches, roadway traffic, energized electric equipment, rotating machinery, all types of vegetation, all types of weather conditions, dust, concrete, paint fumes, solvents, oils and grease, and cleaning compounds. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.

 

This position may be required to work various shifts and overtime commensurate with the project requirements.

Salary : $41,600 - $47,840
