What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Helper position at Lewis County Public Utility District?
- Works with crew members to ensure proper traffic control signage at District jobsites.
- Performs various types of manual labor.
- Assists the warehouse in all aspects of material inventory.
- Deliver materials, trucks and auxiliary equipment as needed.
- Operate forklifts and other Warehouse and/or Facilities equipment as needed.
- Understands and follows District safety rules in accordance with Washington Administrative Code (WAC).
- Performs required maintenance on tools and equipment.
- Punctual and regular in attendance
- Must be able to exercise good customer service and work with other employees in a courteous manner.
- Uses good judgment.
- Must always have attention to detail and be alert.
Other Position Functions:
- Performs traffic control as needed in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
- Provide limited support to the Fiber Department as needed.
- Provide limited support to District tree crews as needed
- May be required to perform TCS (Traffic Control Supervisor) duties as needed.
- Responds and works in conditions other than the normal workday as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- This position is not subject to callout but may need to work overtime when necessary.
- This position will not operate line trucks or excavators.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities outside of TCS duties.
Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations:
- Must be able to pass the District's background and reference checks, field test indicative of actual working tasks, physical examinations, including but not limited to, periodic CDL physicals, random drug and alcohol screening mandated by law.
- Must have a valid Driver’s License and have or the ability to obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) with no air brake restrictions within 90 days. If there is no successful District bidder, a Class A CDL with no air brake restrictions will be a requirement of the position at the time of employment.
- Must have, or the ability to obtain a First Aid Card with CPR.
- Must have, or the ability to obtain a TCS (Traffic Control Supervisor) certification.
- Must have, or the ability to obtain a Washington State Flagger's Certification Card.
- Must qualify for the District’s auto liability insurance.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in MS Outlook, Excel, Word and have basic computer skills.
Other:
- Must have positive interpersonal and customer service skills to courteously deal with and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other District employees, outside vendors, and District customers.
- Must be able to work independently, be self-motivated, and exercise sound judgement.

Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to indoor and outdoor environments. Outdoor settings include all types of property and site conditions including open spaces, timberlands, urban developments, flat and hilly terrain, building construction sites, and road rights-of-way. Indoor settings include commercial and industrial sites that can involve cramped spaces, moving machinery, etc. Individuals may be exposed to hazardous conditions, including but not limited to obstacles, heights, open trenches, highway traffic, electric lines, all types of vegetation, fiberglass insulation, paint fumes, wood preservatives, solvents, oils, and cleaning compounds. The noise level in the work environment may range up to 85 decibels.
