Job Title:               SCHOOL FOOD SERVER and/or CASHIER

Classification:       FOOD SERVER

Reports To:           Food Service Director/Principal/Superintendent

FLSA Status:         Non-exempt/Classified

SUMMARYThe Food Server will serve attractive and nutritious meals in an efficient and friendly manner, under sanitary conditions, to all students and staff.  If involved with the breakfast program, the Food Server will also prepare, serve, clean up and perform the necessary recordkeeping for this meal.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESOther duties may be assigned

 

  • Perform general cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Required to be punctual, dependable, clean, and must learn and practice all sanitary and safety procedures upon arrival at work site.
  • Assist with the training and supervision of cafeteria helpers.
  • Required to maintain physical condition to be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Assist custodial staff with the maintenance of trash and garbage collection following sanitary requirements.
  • Responsible for the washing and sanitizing of utensils, cupboards, coolers, counters, tables and furnishings in the cafeteria and kitchen following each meal.  Refill necessary items for the next meal.
  • Perform food handling, preparation, and serving duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for the safe and timely preparation of the breakfast meal following daily production sheet instructions.
  • Responsible for the daily recordkeeping of student and adult breakfast participation using the building meal tracking plan.
  • Responsible for adequate serving portions by comparing amounts of food received with daily production sheets.
  • Responsible for recording and maintaining proper food temperatures throughout meal period.
  • Organizes and prepares utensils and food portions for serving.
  • Serves students and staff meals in a pleasant, helpful and efficient manner.  The meals must be served within the school's designated time frame.
  • Responsible for the proper handling of leftover foods and items for storage at building or in carriers for transport back to the Central Kitchen.
  • Accurately complete the daily production sheet and place orders to the Central Kitchen for foods and supplies as needed.
  • Perform Ala Carte duties as assigned. (HS & JH Only)
  • Market the Ala Carte sales through attractive displays and proper safety and sanitation procedures, using a friendly and understanding attitude.  Become familiar with all of the items and prices, and seek student input for food requests or unwanted items. (HS & JH Only)
  • Share responsibility for the Breakfast Ala Carte time.
  • Make cash sales accurately, under pressure, assuring a correct balance in order to complete a daily Ala Carte Sales Report for the Head Cashier.
  • Be able to use a calculator and computer as both are used daily.
  • Become familiar with the district meal tracker accounting system so that you can operate the machine correctly after one month of work. (HS & JH Only)
  • Become familiar with the duties of the Head Cashier as you will rotate with other servers in this position on a regular basis.  These duties include recordkeeping and cash balances. (HS & JH Only)
  • Participate in assigned food service training programs as directed by the Superintendent, Food Service Director and/or Principal.

 

This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive and the employee will also perform other duties as directed by the Food Service Director and/or Building Principal.

 

INDIRECT SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESIndirectly supervises 1 or 2 volunteer student cafeteria helpers.  Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCEHigh school diploma or High School Equivalency Degree (HSED); above average general math and bookkeeping skills; one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLSAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

TECHNOLOGY SKILLSThe work environment has increasingly become technology driven.  Lewistown Public Schools expects staff to meet reasonable expectations in the use of computers and other technology, in and out of the workplace.

 

REASONING ABILITYAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONSMust complete a ten (10) hour safety and sanitation course within the first six (6) months of employment.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell.  The employee frequently is required to walk.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  Food preparation, serving, cleanup and cashiering require a standing position.  Lifting includes cases of fresh, frozen and canned food, tray bins and equipment.  Hand/eye coordination necessary for sales, cashiering, serving, cleanup and recordkeeping.

DRUG FREE WORKPLACEScreening tests for alcohol and illegal drug use may be required before hiring and during your employment in the Lewistown Public Schools.  Employees of Lewistown Public Schools must submit to a fingerprint criminal background check.  Any appointment will be contingent upon the results of the criminal background report received from the Department of Justice, which must be acceptable to the Board of Trustees, in its sole discretion.
