General Summary :
Under close supervision of the transportation supervisor and the bus driver, provides assistance to promote safety of students being transported. Assists students in getting on and off the bus.
Essential Functions :
- Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
- Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive environment.
- Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with students, parents, drivers, supervisors and any other stakeholders associated with the position.
- Provides assistance to bus driver by monitoring activities of students being transported; informs driver of any behavioral issues or other problems.
- Assists students in getting onto and off of the bus; operates a wheelchair lift to assist disabled students in getting onto and off of the bus.
- Provides other appropriate assistance to disabled students as required.
- Keeps abreast of safety and first aid procedures related to the duties of the job.
- Coordinates services for special needs students with parents, bus driver and teachers.
- Operates the two-way radio as needed.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge / Skills :
Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the school district which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of school policies, procedures, and operations. Ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation, and utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies used in daily activities. Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and to complete work without the need for direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student records and information. Ability to interact and communicate in an effective and professional manner with supervisors, co-workers, teachers, students, and the general public.
Working Conditions :
Work is conducted primarily on a school bus where one is required to ride in varying weather conditions with exposure to elements such as heat, cold, rain, humidity, etc. At times travel occurs on roads in poor condition. Necessitates constant attention to the supervision of children. Physical demands are related to the operation of a wheelchair lift and the lifting of disabled students generally weighing up to seventy-five pounds onto and off of the bus. Routine local travel is required in the transporting of students to and from school; no overnight travel is required.
Responsibility :
No budgetary responsibility. Supervises students riding the bus.
Evaluation :
Performance of this temporary job will be evaluated by the transportation supervisor and the director of transportation.
