General Summary

Under close supervision of a certified teacher, works with individuals or a small group of students identified as disabled under Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) to provide physical, emotional and academic support for them to gain maximum benefit from special education programs. Assists teachers with various classroom activities.

Essential Functions

  • Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
  • Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with students, teachers, administrators, colleagues and all stakeholders.
  • Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive learning and working environment.
  • Assists with implementation of IEP (Individual Education Program) goals and objectives.
  • Prepares materials for instructional purposes.
  • Assists with academic instruction and classroom activities.
  • Keeps students on task and in compliance with classroom and school rules.
  • Implements behavior intervention plans (BIP) under teacher direction.
  • Assists with personal hygiene and daily living skills (toileting, feeding, drinking, mobility, dressing, etc.
  • Communicates daily with lead certified teacher regarding student progress and other pertinent issues.
  • Is able / willing to manage and respond to student’s behavioral needs.
  • Is able / willing to help utilize visuals to support the student’s programming.
  • Follow behavior interventions as necessary for the student’s success.
  • Follows instructions given by lead certified teacher.
  • Performs record keeping duties including but not limited to maintenance of restroom usage, diet, behavior charts, etc.
  • Assists in data collection under teacher supervision.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to student needs, learning styles, behavior, etc.; responds to student needs.
  • Monitors, inspects and adjusts prosthesis, casts, braces, hearing aids, and glasses.
  • Provides basic first aid.
  • Assists with physical health programs (physical and occupational therapy, adaptive physical education, etc.)
  • Assists with provision of related services (speech therapy, vision services, etc.)
  • Assists in use of augmentative communications devices.
  • Assists with computer assistive technology.
  • Participates in IEP meetings as appropriate.
  • Communicates with parents under teacher direction.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Assists with transitional services to include job and community training, if applicable.
  • Maintains clean instructional areas.
  • Performs simple errands and tasks for students such as sharpening pencils, getting meals, carrying items, etc.
  • Participates in all training sessions as required.
  • Effectively uses personal computing devices and software applications for the management of pertinent information and communication, if applicable.
  • Operates general office equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Education / Work Experience

  • At least two years of study (60 semester hours) at an accredited institution of higher education; or
  • An associate’s degree (or higher); or
  • A passing score (456 or higher) on the ParaPro Assessment.
  • Knowledge / Skills

    Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the school district that pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of school policies, procedures, and operations. Ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation, and utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies used in daily activities. Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and to complete work without the need for direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student records and information. Ability to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, co-workers, teachers, students, and the general public.

    Working Conditions

    Conducts duties primarily in a classroom setting with no significant exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Requires ability to conduct duties that require constant attention working with students and interacting with a variety of adults. Physical demands include general classroom activities, as well as lifting and moving children weighing up to seventy-five pounds to and from wheelchairs, toilets, mats, etc. Contact with students having acute and / or chronic, contagious or non-contagious illness / conditions is possible. Contact with students with behavioral challenges is possible. Job requires the ability to operate adaptive equipment to assist with daily routines. Occasional travel may be required; no overnight travel required.

    Responsibility

    Supports student and their specific needs. Follow behavior intervention plan and implement behavior management strategies.

    Evaluation

    Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the school board’s policy on evaluation of support personnel.
