General Summary
Under limited supervision of the Director of Transportation, assumes a key role in maintaining a safe, smooth and efficient operation of the school bus transportation system.
Essential Functions
Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with students, parents, colleagues and other stakeholders.
Assumes responsibility for the administration of the school bus transportation system in the absence of the director of transportation.
Assists the director of transportation in promoting school bus safety to drivers, students, parents, and the general public.
Assists in the supervision of the overall school bus transportation system.
Assists the director of transportation in all matters regarding bus drivers including recruitment selection, employment and dismissal.
Assists in compiling and maintaining accurate monthly and yearly reports pertaining to the transportation system.
Assists in the proposed routing of all school buses in the attendance area.
Assumes responsibility for making identified route descriptions are kept up-to-date and spot maps are created when needed.
Assists in supervising the activities of bus drivers such as planning routes, providing instruction, guidance and training.
Supervises assigned members of the Transportation department.
Interviews and recommends employees for hire in accordance with human resources practices and Board policies.
Supervisor over the Remedial Training and Training Division.
Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive working and learning environment.
Participates in all professional meetings, conferences, and training sessions as required.
Effectively uses personal computing devices and software applications as applicable for the positions.
Demonstrates appropriate use, care and safe operation of materials, tools and equipment.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Education / Work Experience
Bachelor's degree with a minimum five years of experience in transportation leadership / supervision; or, 10 years experience with transportation supervision, including personnel supervision, route planning and other related experiences.
Valid South Carolina driver’s license
Must earn South Carolina school bus driver’s certificate and commercial driver’s license within 60 days of start date
Knowledge / Skills
Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the school district which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of school policies, procedures, and operations. Ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation, and utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies used in daily activities. Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and to complete work without the need for direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student records and information. Ability to interact and communicate in an effective and professional manner with supervisors, co-workers, teachers, students, and the general public.
Working Conditions
Conducts duties primarily in an office environment with no significant exposure to environmental conditions. Physical demands are restricted to work requiring occasional lifting / moving of items weighing up to fifty pounds and successful completion of the Physical Performance Test as mandated by the State Department of Education. Occasional local travel is required; no overnight travel required. Job requires the operation of a school bus.
Responsibility
Assists with budgetary responsibility as assigned by the Director of Transportation. Supervises bus drivers and staff as assigned.
Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on Evaluation of Administrative Personnel.
